Making Zorin an easier experence for new people

PART 1
I started my journey with Zorin with version 16.3 around 2 years or so ago I was new like most probly reading this an was looking to leave Microslop for something better. So I was on and off with zorin 16.3 making sure it would run the things i needed that being mouse needs to scroll, printer needs to work, and games i play also. all these things finally came together and i upgraded Zorin to 17.1. Things I did then was bacicly learned the new OS.

Now things I feel as a new user that will help overall. the terminal....on no not the TERMINAL!!!...lol yes the is actually your friend some have heard that it requires coding, this is not true but like the command prompt in Windows Its good to know a few basic commands Fisrt is after you have install Zorin its really important that you can see(durning boot) to see this screen

Now your may look differnt as i have a picture in background if you do see this screen on boot here is whats needed to see this as it is important, some folks dont like it and remove it, thats fine as long as you know how to get to this screen on bootup, I highly recomend that you leave this in at boot it WILL help you later

ok whats needed to see this if ya dont Im not sure if nano is installed in Zorin but open a terminal(control+alt and t) and type sudo apt install nano, this will instll it then in the same terminal type sudo nano /etc/default/grub you should see something like this

this is the grub area to see the menu if you dont at boot up use your arrow key and go to the line GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE= and using the arrow key move to right to the " then backspace out hideden leaving the "" and make it menu like this "menu"
now use arrows keys again and move down GRUB_TIMEOUT and change "0" to "5" that will show the grub window at boot for 5 seconds then continue on you can of course just hit enter key and it will go on as well

So why should you have this screen at boot, will sometimes in zorin the updates not all the but sometimes make things fail, zorin isnt perfect but it is getting better if things stop working or something is wrong you may have to "fall back" to a previous" kernel to do that when you see that boot screen use the arrow key and move it down to Advanced options. you will see hopefully 3 or more lines in there if there is only 2 lines hit the one with recovery at end if you have a 3rd line and the kernel number is lower then the top 2 lines move down to there and hit enter,

What is does is takes you back to the last kernel, make sure your system is working fine, what may have caused this is you did some updates and it didnt ask you to restart or you chose to do it later and something went wrong but you didnt see it till next boot up,, this happens thats why that screen is important, not if you know how to get to that screen by hitting esc os shift or maybe F12,F10 whatever you can ignore this part as you know but for a beginner this will help with the errors that come along. More to come

nano is preinstalled. And one Word for the Quotation Marks. There are not neccessary for GRUB_DEFAULT, GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT, GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE and GRUB_TIMEOUT.

AH ok didnt know that just saw they were already there and figured they were needed

Refer to this its abit long but worth reading

PART 2 THE KERNEL
Zorin comes with a kernel and most of the time its works awsome, but there is nothing that says you have to use that kernel. you can install a higher kernel and still get all the update and security updates its just you wont have all the problems(if any) on the current Zorin kernel

at the time of making this that is the kernel i am using and everything works without any troubles. if your computer/laptop is a late 2018 to current year computer it will help you a ton
or you can install the mainline and see all the kernels and choose one from there

here is whats needed to install a higher kernel just make sure you did all the stuff in part 1 in case there is a kernel panic so you can recover and try another kernel

I have been on the liquorix kernel for close to a year now and I have had zero troubles
