Modprobe: FATAL: Module efivars not found in directory /lib/modules/6.17.0-20-generic

I have inserted the boot info at the bottom. I have a Lenovo and set up windows 11 in one partiton and Zorin 18.1 in another. I came across this problem when I was trying to create a Clonezilla backup of my machine. I obviously messed something up. My files on Zorin are still there but I cannot boot it. It will boot into Zorin just until it gets to the Lenovo screen with Zorin indicated at the bottom and then it just stays there. So i booted from usb and ran the repair and the following is what I got. Shure hope someone can help me out. I've done 1 months work on this, so I can get rib of Microsoft.

Boot into Zorin from USB and access a terminal. Then try these steps in order:

Reinstall the kernel and rebuild initramfs

sudo apt update
sudo apt install --reinstall linux-image-$(uname -r)
sudo update-initramfs -u -k all

Verify the EFI boot partition is accessible

sudo fdisk -l

Look for a partition marked as "EFI System" (usually around 500 MB to 1 GB). Note its device name (e.g., /dev/sda1 ).

Reinstall GRUB to ensure it's properly configured for EFI:

sudo grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=ubuntu
sudo update-grub

I'll give it a shot and let you know. Thanks.

One caution before running those commands from the live USB: uname -r there can be the live session's kernel, not the broken install's kernel. I would first free some space on nvme0n1p6 if possible (Boot-Repair says it is 97% full), then chroot into the installed system before reinstalling kernels/initramfs or grub. The efivars message usually means the repair environment cannot write NVRAM; since your BootOrder already has a Zorin entry, also check the Lenovo firmware boot order and try the existing Zorin entry before changing more.

So I tried these commands after booting from USB and I got errors in every command. Would you like me to send you the errors I got from the commands. I did all this before reading your second message. Probably messed everything up even more. I don't understand a lot of what is said in your second message but I will look things up and learn. I really appreciate your help. Thanks again. I will let you know how things turn out once I get a chance to get this done.

You can try to boot to older kernel

  • Restart the PC and press Escape during boot to access the GRUB menu (may also be accessed with Shift)
  • Select "Advanced options for Zorin OS"
  • Here, you can see the available kernels to boot into. Choose the older one (without recovery option)

if it boot come back to us

WOW that worked. That is great. Before the older version there was a couple other version listed. Something like 17.0.11 or 17.1.1 or something. Should I get rid of these or what? When i look at the mainline kernels it show 16.17.0-35- generic running and it shows 17.0.11 and 17.1.1 installed.

Great,
Now run the following command

sudo apt update
sudo apt --fix-broken install

This is what I got.
$ sudo apt --fix-broken install

So I looked at the Mainline Kernels and it shows as 7.0.11 as being installed. Here is the list of images
$ dpkg --list | grep linux-image
rc linux-image-6.17.0-20-generic 6.17.0-20.20~24.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic

ii linux-image-unsigned-7.1.1-070101-generic 7.1.1-070101.202606191302 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 7.1.1

I found this link. Should I give this a shot to get rib of the half installed 7.0.11 package?

Because you removed the mainline repo, do that

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cappelikan/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt --fix-broken install

Did the 3 commands. This is what I got.Did you mean do the commands from the web site I sent you then do the 3 commands?

$ sudo apt --fix-broken install
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
E: The package linux-image-unsigned-7.0.11-070011-generic needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
Didyou mean do the command from the wed site I sent you then do the 3 command?

Do that

sudo apt purge linux-image-unsigned-7.0.11-070011-generic

I don't know what you did but it seem you played a little bit too much with kernels...

Tried the command and got the following. Should I try the commands from the web site I sent you and try this command again?
E: The package linux-image-unsigned-7.0.11-070011-generic needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

OK so I followed the command in the link I sent you an I got rid of 7.0.11 which was flagged as half installed and which had the problem I then reboot and 7.1.1. which was also installed started no problem. I's like to thank you for your help which help me look for some solutions as well and we got it done. Thanks again.
