Mouse freezes and locks programs

I am on Zorin 17.3, and will not update yet. Since the latest software updates, I have been having lock-ups with the mouse/cursor in my browser (Vivaldi), email (Betterbird) and also while trying to access the File manager from my bottom tray.
Firstly the browser: when clicking on the + sign for a new tab, nothing happens. This might be a Vivaldi issue, I don't yet know. Secondly; on two occasions while trying to attach files to an email, the email client has locked up completely and I've had to force a shutdown. Thirdly; while clicking on the File manager symbol in my bottom tray, the cursor changes from an arrow to a small hand, then insists on dragging the symbol out of the tray. I cannot shake it off and again have to crash the system to restart. I have never had these problems before; I've had mouse freezes a long time ago but the nature of these today is quite different. Any thoughts welcomed.

For Vivaldi and Betterbird: Are they installed as .deb or Flatpak? If Flatpak, I would suggest to try it with the .deb Versions.

Because of the Mouse Corsor: Is it a Third-Party Cursor Theme or the default one?

Vivaldi is the .deb package. Betterbird seems to be only available in Zorin as a Flatpak.
The mouse cursor must be the original one that was installed with Zorin; I'm not aware of having installed anything special for cursors; it's the sort of thing I never concern myself about.

I think I recall having a problem with the tar.xz archive that was downloaded from the Betterbird site. Therefore I think I may have installed the Flatpak within Zorin. But on the whole it has been running ok....until yesterday. Cannot reproduce the problem today, though.

just as a general user, vivaldi deb runs sweet as a browser... from may this year never encountered a prob.

I have been doing some testing. Although I couldnt reproduce the problem yesterday, it occurred again late last night, and this morning. On a whim, I shut off the hardware acceleration on the mouse, in "Settings". So far, after several hours, the problem has not reappeared in the email, the tray at bottom of screen, or the browser tabs. Even the silly little hand on the cursor has not come back. Fingers crossed for success....

I upgraded from 17 to 18 - never had a mouse freeze on 17 but now I am constantly getting the system freezing.
Did you solve your mouse freeze problem?
I am considering moving back yto 17

If you still use the computer with nvidia gt740, install kernel 6.8 with mainline installer tool then you can use nvidia driver 470. With kernel 6.14 this driver doesn't work.

Test it, if everything works fine then, keep it.
But perhaps it is better for you to go back to Zorin 17.3 with your old hardware.
Also switch to Xorg at login (cogwheel) if you are on Wayland and disable hardware acceleration in your browser.

Hi Forpli, I have three PCs running on Zorin, only one is on 18, this PC's specs are as follows; Dell Optiplex 790, Intel Core i5 2400, 16GB memory, Intel HD graphics.
So are you saying this is not up to the required level for Zorin 18?

This one should work with Zorin 18. Do you have switched to XOrg?

The system is set by default to Wayland

Test if it works better when you switch to XOrg. Logout and at login click on your username then a cog wheal appears at the bottom right corner. There select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg". XOrg is recommended for older hardware as yours.
