Hey guys,
I have installed zorin os yestreday and finally got everything installed and working today.
Now I was moving some files from the internal SSD format ext4 to my external HDD format ntfs
95% of the time the hard drive is plugged into the PC.
Other 5% is another windows computer (family) and the television.
I've noticed the speed of the tranfer is extremely slow. (slower then download speeds even)
I've checked with the system monitor and don't see anything special everything is like 10% used?
On windows this process would be over in like 10-20 seconds. (which it always has)
Can anyone help me find a reason why this is going so slow?
I've read things about not enough RAM memory but that's not really an option considering less then 7GB is used and I have 64GB installed. . .
I'm asking because I regularly transfer (big) 1-5GB files on my computer and don't want it taking up 2-3 hours every time. . .
Thank you in advance
What file system is the External HDD formatted to?
If it is NTFS, that would explain why it is fast on Windows OS, but slow on Zorin OS.
NTFS is a Windows OS filesystem. Windows OS cannot read/write to EXT4 but Zorin OS can read/write to NTFS by use of translation tools (ntfs-3g).

I checked it this morning and it is indeed ntfs.
So I should format it to for example fat32?
exFAT, actually. FAT32 is limited in size support and cannot handle over 4 gigs in size.
If this is an option for you, by all means. That is great.

Thank you very much!
I formatted the drive immediately to exfat. After installing the needed exfat-fuse files.
to be honest i haven't seen a fast HDD drive since the 2000th. they are great for backups but you better let them just do their job while you something else. 5gb in 3 hours is indeed very slow. also check if you plugged it in the fastest usb port. Also keep in mind that most Drives get slower the fuller they get. everything is fine until you hit about 90% full then you can feel how things slow down. that's why most times you only get like 15gb on a 16 gb usb stick and stuff. hope that helps
