Hi there.
Yesterday I switched from Windows 11 to Zorin 17.3.
I've noticed that after the switch during gaming (World of Warcraft), my laptop gets very hot on the top left corner, so much that I can't even touch it anymore. That's also when the game starts lagging massively. That wasn't the case in Windows. Also before, the fan was much louder (i.e. was properly cooling the hardware).
What can I do to ensure proper cooling of my system so it doesn't overheat?
This is my first post on a Linux forum and I don't know much about coding or terminal use, so please be patient with me and just let me know if you need more info. Thank you
The fans in the msi notebook are not set to auto, not in windows and not in linux. MSI wrote a program for it in windows called msi centre to allow you to set fan speed. I have a MSI notebook as well MSI Crosshair 15 B12UGSZ and during gaming i always enable coolerboost.
I was quit surprised the fans did'nt go up automatically during gaming, while my older Acer Predator G9-793 did do this automatically.
For me it's Fn+1 on a Tuxedo laptop. I've only discovered this by accident and was scared that the computer was going to blow up! Quite a handy feature to have.
I use it for heavy games, i also did noticed it sucks out all the heat. My nvme drives stays cool to when using coolerboost. When i don't use it it can make a difference of 20c.
I am also a gamer, and I have a 10th generation MSI GE76 Raider machine from 2021. These modern gaming notebooks get super hot, when you push 1080P to 4K at high FPS, and maxed out graphics settings.
In an effort to control the heat buildup to improve performance, (as well as computer life) I got an Afmat twin-blower cooling pad. It manages to reduce temps by 5 to 10 degrees, just using the cooling pad alone.
I also went into the BIOS, used the secret unlock command, then navigated to the performance section, where I applied a -0.50mv undervolt, which doesn't destroy performance of the CPU, but ads a considerable curb to thermal runaway!
