Mullvad VPN Tray Icon bug

Hello,

I have an issue with the Mullvad VPN GUI tray icon. I installed it using (Mullvad VPN for Linux). However, the tray icon does not show up correctly. It is supposed to show up as a green lock, but instead it shows up like something else. However, if I lock the computer, and then unlock it, then the icon will show up correctly.

Please see attached image.

Is there a way for me to fix this behavior? If not, where can I report the bug to the ZorinOS developers?

I can't test that at the moment, but you could try if it helps to replace the Zorin appindicators with this gnome extension:

Install extension manager

sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-manager

open it and disable at tab "installed" the zorin appindicators.
Then go to tab browse and search for the other extension and install it.

Test if it works. I read that it helped with other VPN tray icons maybe also with Mullvad.
Undo it when it doesn't work.

So, You added the Mullvad Repo. Did You had any Issues dring the Adding or when downloading and installing Mullvad VPN?

The behavior was the same with this extension as with the zorin appindicators.

No, I have had no issues with it. The app icons are the only issue.

Does Your System run in Wayland or X11? You can check that with the Terminal Command echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

I use wayland. If I wanted to use X11, I would be using Linux Mint instead of ZorinOS.

Well, but sometimes X11 offers better Experience. Did You switched to check if it behaves the same?

I have now checked to see what the behavior is under "Zorin on Xorg." The behavior is the same.

Maybe try it with reinstall the VPN.

This is due to a problem with the Zorin AppIndicator extension. This has been known for quite some time now (since Zorin OS 17, at least). The Zorin Group has not fixed it; not even for Zorin OS 18. What worked for me before was to simply disable the AppIndicator extension (to make the icon go away). This was one of the smaller reasons why I left Zorin OS in the end. I'm on MX Linux 25 now.

I will not consider a return to Zorin OS until Artyom and Kyrill fix the OS properly, and institute a proper Q&A process so to iron out bugs before major milestone OS releases (e.g., versions 19, 20, et cetera). Consider turning the AppIndicator extension off, and living with it that way, OR just switch to another OS (like Linux Mint or MX Linux, for example). Good luck. Please let us know what you do.

Thank you for the responses. Where can I report the issue directly to the Zorin Group?

Good question. Leave feedback in the "Feedback" subforum here. Thanks.

This seems to be a general problem, not restricted to your VPN software - for example I had the same problem with the Dropbox menu (see this post), you can only see it after locking and unlocking. I think this is a problem with Ubuntu as well, see this and this.

Not sure what the exact problem is but it is annoying and I hope they fix it!

This could be a fix, it work for me

I recently updated my computer and restarted it. I no longer seem to have this problem with the Mullvad VPN icon. However, since I updated multiple packages, including mullvad vpn itself, I do not know if the issue was fixed by Mullvad VPN or by one of the other packages that I updated.
