Ok I have a problem. I do a lot of photo editing. Back when I was using Linux Mint, I was able to open two folders at once, and simply click and drag files from one folder to the other. I can't seem to find any way to do this with Zorin. Is there some way to open two folders at the same time, and click on a file an move it to the other folder? So far I have been unable to do this even when I click "open in new window" I can only view one at a time. I'd really hate to have to change to another distribution. This has been a big pain for me. I have way too many files to use the click and move option. It is simply too time consumng.
Ok, I assume by "opening two folders at once" I take that as in the same window? If that's the case, I believe your best bet would be to install another file manager (for example, Nemo is the file manager in cinnamon). Could try Dolphin or Thunar too. I personally use Thunar as I find Files(Nautilus, which is what Zorin uses by default) to be too limiting.
Right click on the folder and select open another window.
Here a sample: Second naming "nieuw venster" is "New window"
If I can figure out how to do this I will. This is the one thing about Zorin that I totally dislike. I also do not like that there is no way to simply minimize a window. You only have the choice of having it open and taking up the entire screen, or closing it. As far as I am concerned this it totally stupid!
Yes I know you can do that. I want to be able to have both folders open in the same window, so I can drag and drop files! Is this because of the way the Desktop is configured, or is it due to the file manager? Hope that's not too dumb a question to ask.
Installing Nemo (the file manager from cinnamon, if that's what you prefer) should be as simple as:
sudo apt install nemo
In a terminal window.
Thanks
Sorry but the older this senior gets, the more things seem to become difficult.
No worries, heck even for the knowledgeable, there's a lot of stuff to know fiddling with all this stuff. That's why there's forums so that we can help out where we can.
This is a feature of the file manager. The file manager in Zorin OS Lite is different (Thunar) and it has this option. You can install it as well if you want to try it. The command is nearly the same as with Nemo:
sudo apt install thunar
Although, you can drag & drop files between multiple windows.
Click on the application icon that shows up on the taskbar and it will toggle the visibility. Alternatively, right-click on the window bar and you will have an option to hide it:
OK I installed Dolphin ( which I used with Kubuntu ), and this seems to do the trick. Thanks!
OK, I think my problem has been solved. Thanks to all!
Great to hear! Have a great holiday.
I'm pretty sure Nautilus (gnome Files) allows grag and drop files between two open folder windows. Certainly does between open folders of different drives, as I do that regularly. I will check myself when I have ZorinOS Core booted.
Yes, that works. I do that every Time when I have two Directories - for Example an USB Stick and something in my home Directory. One open Nautilus Window for the USB Stick and one for the Folder that I need, Pictures for Example.
Its always driven me mad that I can't have two folders open in one window with Nautilus, and I basically never use it since. I know I could have two windows open, and it works, it's just annoying because I can literally just have another tab and make it work without fiddling with a third window because maybe I'm editing a file and, yeah. That's basically one major reason I never use it.
What do You mean with ''minimize'' exactly? You mean minimizing in the Taskbar? that works with the Minimize Button like You see in the top right Edge in @zenzen's Picture.
Or do You mean the Size of a Window? That You can do, too. You go to the Edge of a Window and then You should see this Symbol:
When You then hold the Mouse-Key, You can change the Size of a Window.
I know Nemo where You have that and Nautilus where it isn't (I think not even in the up-to-date Gnome 47 if I remember right). I personally can work without this Tab-Model. but I must say that I did it that Way in Windows the whole Time, too. So, for me it isn't directly uncomfordable. But that is personal Preference. One like it so and another one so.
I forgot the obvious way of doing it! I think the minimize button can be toggled on/off through Zorin Appearance, but it should be there by default.
I've been using XFCE for a while now and I'll agree that the multiple pane view is useful... but one thing that throws me off constantly is that to change the directory each panes shows, you have to make sure to click it first.
It already happened to me a few times that I forget to click, or I did it too quickly or something, and then I'm moving folders to the wrong location.
That's the only reason I prefer two windows side by side: the more explicit, the less chance for errors
It is by default active, but interestingly not available in Zorin Appearance. But it is adjustable in gnome-tweaks
