my desktop just disappeared, leaving the login screen, can't login, just goes around and around. restarted, same problem. had to force a shutdown. Now the machine gets all the way to desktop load sound, but has an opp's! message saying logout and retry. Again around and around. Don't know what to do. I don't want to make it worse, and don't know enough about linux. I was in the middle of downloadin a PDF editor, and poof! no destop. HELP!!
Can you clarify what you mean about "Downloading a PDF Editor?"
Downloading something should not crash the desktop.
Possibilities include if your drive is full IF a download was enough to crash things. This would not be my first guess... but checking Disk Usage Analyzer app can answer that question quickly.

The Software Store defaults to Flatpak.
Flatpak is a Bloated package.
And if root fills, Gnome can crash.
i have no desktop on that machine??, and the boot drive had 550gb of free space. all was normal, and then it was`nt
it is loading up normally, i just cant get at it my vpn shows up , before i set it to minimised, because i couldnt see the error message.

no i have no access to the desktop, the vpn loads in it`s window, but has no window controls, cou cant move it around. i went into its setting ans set it to load mininised

Do you have a Grub Menu - that shows at boot to select the Operating System?
If you do not see it, try tapping the tab or the esc key at boot, like you were playing Mortal Kombat.
That KeyPress is supposed to bring up the Grub Menu...
From the Grub Menu - select "Zorin On...[kernel version, probably 6.17] (Recovery)
In the recovery menu, arrow key down to "Drop to root prompt" and run
df -h
Hi Again Aravisian, sorry for the delay in responding, I just got too depressed to face this, went to bed for nearly 2 days. still not in a good place, spent last night updating all my 9 laptops, and now I have another casualty to add to the list. One of my updated laptops has gotten into the exact same place. nothing else except the updates was done to this laptop, and after the requested restart, i got the login screen, and around and around we go. forced a shutdown, and on restart I get the please logout and retry message. Just tried your suggestion on both machines. On re laptop it keeps reshowing the please logout message. On my main machine it say command not found. I`m poking about at the moment, but 2 machines down, and it looks like Zorin / Linux update might be the cause 0n certain machines

I wish I could sympathise instead of being able to relate. I have disappeared for months at a time, sometimes. Believe me, I understand.

On those two, are you in need of data recovery if you cannot get them to work?
And if possible - Would you be willing to test running Zorin OS Lite on them?
I use Zorin OS Lite, never Core and... I do not ever experience any the above. But Core users... do.
It might be a simple way of destressing those machines.
hi again, the problem is that i cant loose the contents of the main machine. and since it is all working , except for being able to see the desktop, i cant see the point in having to format it to install another lesser system. it there was a way to run the upgrade to version 18 from grub, i could do that and it would keep all of the contents of the main machine
As you are a Pro user, you are entitled to support for your main machine via Team Zorin. I advise you complete the support request form from here:
Once they have provided you with the solution (hopefully), take notes and apply to other problem machines. You only get entitled to support for your main/prime machine in use.
Zorin lite is not inferior or less powerful than Zorin Core. Yes, it is not quite as visually appealing as Core and not to everyone's taste, but it is more configurable, needs less ressources and you will experience far fewer session crashes with it.

Hi again Aravisian, thank you for your kind words. I had to wipe and reinstall on the on the laptop, buggered it up trying to learn how to recover the main machine. Im wondering if any of the following is possible. Can you run the upgrade to version 18 pro , from the grub promt, if so how?. Can i add older kernals to my machine, if so, how, and where do I put them, and where do I get then from. I only have the current kernal, as I was using ubuntu cleaner, and its option to remove unused kernals (Wont be doing that again!). Thank you for your time, and patience.
The Grub Prompt is not the same as TTY or the Recovery Menu option of "Drop to Root prompt"
The Grub Prompt is only for passing basic commands to the kernel. You cannot upgrade the system from the Grub Prompt.
Can Zorin OS version be upgraded in the terminal? I do not think it can be. Canonical reserved the do-release-upgrade command, so running that is likely to upgrade you to Ubuntu, Not Zorin OS.
Instead, Zorin OS uses their GUI Zorin Upgrader tool to redirect Zorin Packages.
You can install the stable kernel with
sudo apt install linux-image-6.14.0-37-generic linux-headers-6.14.0-37-generic linux-modules-6.14.0-37-generic linux-modules-extra-6.14.0-37-generic
