Gettin gready to change my Windows 10 laptop to Zorin Lite, clean install, no Windows. I'm in need of a temporary (private), inexpensive cloud backup service that would provide a smooth transition from Windows to Zorin, but after much (overwhelming) online research, have not been able to select one. Would very greatly appreciate any & all suggestions! TY!
What are you storing?
Ie. Mostly applications, documents, images, videos?
Yes - exactly ... some of each (approx. 240 gb)
I know some people use Murena:
Murena's Workspace
It's at murena.io I believe, but that workspace section will show you the pricing.
There's also proton drive:
Proton Drive cloud storage pricing and plans | Proton
I can't comment very much on either of these options being better or worse, or good in general. I just know it's a couple of options people regularly bring up when they're trying to do what I believe you're doing as well.
I tried proton drive as a free trial (or free tier, whichever it was) and it was fine for what I tried, but I didn't go that in depth.
It would be good to know how much are you willing to spend on this, considering you only need it temporarily? Buying a new drive will be the cheapest option in terms of cost per GB, and also the best privacy-wise. Plus, you can continue using it as your storage needs increase, or as a backup (all drives fail eventually).
Is there a specific Reason why You want use a Cloud Service for BackUp and not using an external Drive?
@Ponce-De-Leon: I'm living abroad & electronics are very expensive where I am...
@zenzen: Good advice - thank you... I wouldn't want to spend more than say $10 for a month, but a lot of these services seem to have contracts for a year or two instead of monthly...
@applecheeks37... thank you - haven't checked out Murena - will do so, and take another look at proton! Thanks again
Google drive does 2TB for 16NZD not sure what the pricing may look like for you since it'll be different In New Zealand to everywhere else
Proton Drive offers single month subscriptions but you'll need the 500GB plan for €9.99/month to save all your data there. It's probably the best option to balance cost and privacy online.
@zenzen... yes, thank you so much - I was kinda leaning in that direction too. Was hoping for a bit smaller $, in case I wanted to keep it long term, but privacy is #1, and the main thing is to "git 'er done" before Oct.!! Thanks again
@DotWayton Not fond of google, but thx anyway
You can still encrypt your data before uploading it to the cloud provider. That way, even Google won't be able to read it. But for your use case this is more trouble than it's worth. I know money is a sensitive thing but it'll make your life a lot easier going with a paid service that does all of this for you.
