New install On Desktop PC

Hello!

Iv been distro hopping for about 10 years or more. Windows 10 has just got to the point that im done! I came across Zorin OS and I finally found my permanent OS! I did a test install on my Laptop today and im stunned....I love it.

So i have a desktop pc and here are the specs:

Intel core i7 4790 3.6ghz-4ghz boost 4 core 8 threads
16GB DDR3 1600mhz
Nvidia GTX 1080ti
1TB SSD
500GB SSD

I know its old but still runs new games at 1080P no problem. But my question is. Is Raid 0 easy to set on Linux install? Id rather just have both drives as one then messing with 2. But if not then I suppose a single drive would be ok.

Any thoughts? Iv never done raid and wanted to try it out now I that I finally found my OS!

Thanks to Zorin!

Welcome to the forum!

Glad you like it here

As for raid, typically you want the drives to be the same size. It can work with different sized drives, but you're going to be limited to the size of the smallest drive for each drive. So technically raid 0 would work, but it would restrict it to 500gb per drive (as that's the smallest drive).

So personally I don't think it's worth setting up with your current setup, but that's your call, not mine. Also you'd typically have the option of a software or hardware raid, depending on if your hardware supports the feature or not. I prefer hardware if ever possible, but for most people the difference is moot.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize it would limit the size. Not worth it to me. So ill use the extra drive for something else! Thanks!

In addition to what was said above, i just needed to say that im one that prefers software raid as there have been numerous issues with hardware raid. There are numerous variants of software raid. I don't run raid on this computer, but i do on my server - which proxmox (hypervisor) offers.

my Z91 board has a raid controller i do believe but honsty im going to ditch the raid and keep my storage of 1.5TB instead of 500GB because I have alot of steam titles

Just to clarify, it would end up being a raid 0 total of 1tb (500gb + 500gb) but you'd still be losing the 500gb from the larger drive*

You are right. My mathing skills went dumb for a sec haha. 500GB is alot in imo because of my steam and gog games. I honestly dont think the speed would make much of a difference to me. Its already fast enough for me when i was on windows 10 like 5 sec boot. So i think with this OS it will be soild. Be an easier install as well. Im just wanting to install and play with this new OS more on my desktop and have fun! Im on my Laptop with 8gb ram and a i5 6300u 2 core 4 thread 2.4 base 3.0ghz boost and samsung ssd and its running nice. my 4970 is aprx 75% faster than this cpu.

and of course 16gb ram 1600 in dual channel and a 1080ti

With LVM you can combine multiple drives, of any size, to create one large pool of storage.

If you are just testing the waters, I agree that keeping things simple is probably best. Give it a try, make sure you like how things work, etc. Then you can worry about customizing

You are right about LVM. Im setting it up on my desktop today and we will see how it goes

But yes ima go simple and go from there. Thanks for your response!
