NVIDIA card, but "no proprietary drivers are in use"

I am unable to choose which nvidia driver to use in the list under Software & Updates.

I thought perhaps it could be the card, so I tried installing Linux Mint and that worked just fine. I've re-installed Zorin 17 Pro and have the same error. It's a fresh install, all I've done so far is to run an update, and I don't know what to do from here - I just want to play Diablo IV!

lshw -C video gives me this

The screenshot indicates a manual installation of the driver - is the system telling lies? Did you try installing Zorin with the option to install with 'latest nvidia drivers'?

Yes, I did!

Can you clarify your answer, yes you installed the driver manually, or yes you chose the option to install Zorin with latest driver?

oh, sorry - I used the nvidia drivers install.

... at point of installation?

I installed Zorin from a USB thumbdrive and chose the nvidia drivers option, yes.

OK, think I saw something about this elsewhere. When you login to Zorin you are using the Wayland compositor (the thing that draws the desktop). Logout of Zorin,
select your username at the login screen but don't answer your password. A cog appears lower right. Click on it and select 'Zorin on xorg'. The enter your password and login - do you still have the same issue?

Huh, very interesting - I don't have an option for "Zorin on xorg". My options are

  • Zorin Desktop
  • Zorin Desktop on Wayland

I've tried logging in on the Wayland option, and have the same issue. Logged back to normal Zorin Desktop and issue still persists.

Please launch terminal and follow the commands outlined in this post:

You can change the driver to whatever you want to use... e.g. 550, 545...:"

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-545

Awesome, thank you! I'll try that and report back.

That's done the trick!

Thank you so much.

To make an Addition to that: When you installed it with the modern Nvidia Drivers it installs the 550 Driver. Because this one is newer that the Drivers on the List in the ''Additional Drivers'' Tab it isn't listed there and the last Option ist shown.

If You should have the 6.8 Kernel installed, the 545 Driver that @Aravisian named in the command could causing Issues. There would be the 535 or 550 Driver a better Solution. Take a Look at this Post for that:
