Could that be because itās trying to do it in the live usb instead of the Zorin partition? Should I do it in /dev/etc instead?

In your BIOS; did you check if you are set to MBR or EFI?
In the LiveUSB, did you determine if the Zorin Install on disk has /boot/EFI and that the EFI directory is not empty?
It has it but itās empty

If that directory is empty, that leaves us uncertain. It may mean that Zorin OS was installed as MBR... Or it may mean that the EFI partition (The ESP), being unmounted, is not being displayed in that directory.
So, our goal here is to figure out why a black screen - we considered it possible that you had a split MBR/EFI install going on since installing as MBR was a suggestion made earlier.
Do you remember explicitly changing BIOS and installing as MBR?
I got rid of the black screen with the acpi=off spec_store_bypass_disable i915.force_probe=* commands but that led to the āhave to mount kernel firstā error.

Well. Good news...
And it helped you explore some essentials.
The efi partition is p1 where windows boot is. I made another efi partition at p6 in case I needed it and have tried telling install to use both of them at different times without solving the NVram problem. I got the boot menu to show up by doing a bcd edit using instructions from Ubuntu forum.
But I still get the error about kernel though maybe Iāll try agai after the changes tonight. Concerned that boot efi is empty though. I

You should only have one EFI partition. This may actually be part of the problem...
I recommend consolidating to one. We can create a walkthrough on this when you are ready.

Thought I could get rid of it in disks but doesnāt have the ability to revert it to free space. I could probably make it something other than efi - FAT for example. I do know I can make it free space and add the remainder on to the Zorin partition in the install process so that might be the way to go while trying another install. May still error out at the grub install fail point but could be enough done to allow booting from the menu that I manually installed earlier in the week. Still concerned that the squashfs isnāt going to be in the right place. Is it supposed to be in the Zorin partition? Or in the efi partition? Efi is probably too small so I assume the Zorin one. Is there somewhere I can copy it from? Should it go in the boot/efi folder? It should be on the usb stick but that is a iso file in ventoy. Is it the squashfs.mod file that was read only in the little loop drive when I was running usb live?
