Hello Ladies and Gentlemen!
I want report from a little Experiement with Debian 13 stable and DankLinux. To explain: DankLinux is not a Distro. It is a ... You could call it Package or Setup to install A WM (Niri or Hyprland) plus the Dank Material Shell. It offers a preconfigured WM. But You can use the Shell on other WM's, too.
Because I found that very interesting, I thought, I could try it. On Debian 13, You could install Hyprland from the Debian Backports. So, I would have a WM but I wanted to go all-in and have a preconfigured one.
The Install Experience was very good. It is Terminal-based. You start the curl Command and You get a Prompt what first detects Your System. Then, You can choose between Niri and Hyprland but in Case of Debian 13 stable only Niri is available. Then, you can choose between Alacritty, Ghossty and Kitty as Terminal. I didn't want any of them. Unfortunately there wasn't a ''None of them'' Option. Maybe something to add.
Then, you get a List of Stuff what will be installed and You can choose if running with sudo or run0. The Installation Process adds the Dank Linux Repo's (AvengeMedia over Opensuse). The Installation doesn't take much Time. And to start, you log out after the Installation and on the Gear Icon choose the WM that You have chosen. And then ... Tadaa! It's there!
I played a bit with it and was very impressed how smooth everything was. The overall Design wasn't bad. And the Shell offers much Options to set up - but to be clear here: This is not a whole Desktop Environment. So, there are Borders. You have a lot of Customization Options and even a Plugin System.
But when it is about Window Options and Setups, the Shell ends and You have to go in the WM Configuration File. That was new to do it that Way. But interesting at the same Time. I didn't dived too deep in; was only as an Experiment made. A nice Thing is that Changes (mostly) work immediately. So, You don't have to reboot or logout(login every Time when You changed something.
The Preconfiguration helped a lot and saved Time. Otherwise, I would had to set up the Window Positions and Modes for a lot of Stuff, hahaha! So, I only had to adjust some Things. Some Programs started already tiled. But I prefer the Window Mode. so, I had to adjust that in the Config File. But besides that ... I mostly played with the Shell Settings.
