I had been using Open Tv for my streaming service, as its the best and most practical available. sometime in the last half dozen software updates it stopped working correctly. it installs, and talks to the server, but the channel icons are no longer displayed. Ihave contacted the author of the programme, but he says it not a real error,and seem to be uninterested in helping to solve my problem. Here are links to the program, and the issue I raised with the author on guthub. Research seems to suggest a depricated library version of gtk that handles widgets. I`m gussing that the channel icons are all widgets. Here are the links:
It's not very clear what the issue is. Is there some functionality actually missing, or are we talking only about missing icons?
In the README of this project is stated that this is maintained by a single developer who's already struggling to keep this project running. The best way to get support is to be as descriptive as possible about your issue, and being patient.
In the settings for this application, is there any setting to remove the cache, internal storage, etc?
hi Zenzen, I have cleared the caches many times, reinstalled it from flathub and a .deb file many times, and the problem persists on more than machine. Im a 40 year dos , windows veteran so I have some experience in tracking down stuff like this. but this is linux, and a very different kettle of fish. I`m really peeing in the wind here. Having to use IPTVNator, which has a very disorganised and unintuitive interface. iptv smarthers expert also worked for a time, but also stopped. really at a loss as to what broke. If there was a way to go back to the previous version of gtk, I could test this. but I dont know enough linux wise. p-). thanks for your reply
Restart the computer, and try launching OpenTV again.
If during the installation you see an error message saying something like "this environment is externally managed", repeat the last command with a couple of extra flags:
Hi Again Zenzen, I think I`m giving up on open tv. The correctly installed program, with all login and server information when working properly should look like this:
all settings and login / server information are identical.
it used to look like pictrure 1, before on of the updates broke it.
Any way thank you and everyone who tried to help me solve this. I hope you all have a really good christmas (If you celebrate Christmas that is!!)
cheers
One of the 24.04 updates included a GTK4 update and LibAdwaita update.
This update included tightening more css rules and deprecating some render fallbacks.
Have you tried
GSK_RENDERER=gl open-tv
Or
GSK_RENDERER=cairo open-tv
If either of those get the channel icons to render, then it is definitely due to the GTK update from Gnome, and sadly, only the package maintainer can bring the package up to date with Gnomes breakages.
Since, you know... the users just accept the "Microsoft-like" Chains of LibAdwaita, we are stuck with that.
One thing you can try is launching Open TV from the terminal by running the executable command. That might actually show an error message that points to the exact issue that's causing this behavior. But I will also try to run this on my end tomorrow and take a closer look.
I tested the linked .deb file with version 1.7. of open tv today and together with installing the programs (mpv, ffmpeg, yt-dlp) as mentioned in github it seems to have worked. I have never used such an app before, but after downloading an m3u playlist it looks so:
Hi All, hope you had a good christmas and New Year. The author of open tv (Now Called Fred tv) has come to the rescue!!. there is now a new version, and guess what?? it works!.
So I`m a very happy chappie. much thanks for all your efforts to help. Onwards to Zorin 18!!
