How do I run a smart test
I asked chat gpt and it said go to bios and storage or advanced and look for something related to smart test I have both but in storage there is device configuration, storage options, dps self test and boot order in advanced there is power on options, bios power on, onboard devices, bus options, device options and pci vga configuration which one should I choose?
I did a hard disk check I just found out how and I did quick check then I’m gonna do extensive after
Quick check - smart check and short dst passed now doing extensive check
Enssure the smart tools are installed:
sudo apt install smartmontools
Ensure it is enabled (replace sdX with your actual drive I.D. You can use lsblk
command to get your drive I.D. info)
sudo smartctl -s on /dev/sdX
I did a smart test it passed
Also sudo doesn’t work it just says sudo command not found
Which brings us back to here:
Testing the drive is just to see if the Drive is the cause of the fault.
Ultimately, the install of Zorin OS is broken - due to as yet an undetermined cause.
How long has Zorin OS been installed?
Have you backed up your personal data?
I’m not sure how long it has been installed for it was already on it when I first got the pc which was like last year and I haven’t backed up my data it used to work fine before
And the sudo -i just says sudo command not found
I can’t go on Reddit because it’s blocked on this device but maybe there’s a fix for the black recovery mode screen
You can use a LiveUSB to try to access the hard drive your personal files are on and try to save them to a safe location like a USB Stick or External drive.
I don’t think I have a live usb
The LiveUSB is created by the user. Since you did not install Zorin OS on the machine, it makes sense that it wouldn't be an action you remember.
You can use any USB stick greater in size than 12 gigs to burn a downloaded .iso of Zorin OS to as a bootable media.
You can use the installation instructions here to see how to create one.
I can use another laptop tomorrow so I’ll try it then is there no way to like completely reset everything on my pc? I don’t have anything important or anything I need to keep
If you are not concerned with losing any personal data, I would use the Installation Instructions link I posted above and perform a fresh new install of Zorin OS.
Bear in mind, though, that something corrupted your current installation and without being sure about what that cause is, I would be eyeing your hard drive suspiciously. You may want to start planning its replacement...
Ok I’ll reinstall it tomorrow and if it does or doesn’t work then I’ll come back
Can’t find /root in /etc/fstab how do I fix this
You also cannot find sudo
or the kernel.
Your build is corrupted.
If the root thing worked then my pc could finally work
