Popup darkening effect prevents colour-sensitive work in Krita

Hi, I am a new Zorin user and so far I am quite happy with the OS, except for one issue which is hindering my ability to work in a major way. It is the visual effect of darkening the window when a popup appears.

Here's a gif of the effect:

(Sorry for the tiny gif, you can view the original .mp4 in Reddit here): https://www.reddit.com/r/zorinos/comments/1gbx7v1/a_way_to_turn_off_an_annoying_visual_effect/

Is there a way to turn off this effect? I have looked through settings but did not find a way to turn it off. Turning off animations did not help with this issue.

This effect makes it really tough to work in Krita. For example, when I want to tweak colours of an image, I create an adjustment layer with a HSL/HSV adjustment filter which works through a popup window, but when the popup appears it darkens the image, which makes all value/colour adjustments a complete guesswork since I can't see the actual result until I close the popup and the darkening effect goes away. It is basically the same thing if someone forced me to wear sunglasses whenever I went to edit the colours of an image, it is quite hard to tweak the colours and values accurately while looking at the image through a darkened lens! :slightly_smiling_face:

" Prevent Krita Popups from Stealing Focus

Based on the provided search results, to prevent popups in Krita on Gnome from losing focus on the application:

  1. Disable the popup palette in Krita: Go to “Settings” > “Configure Krita” > “Canvas Input Settings” and remove the shortcut for “Show Popup Palette”. This should prevent the popup palette from stealing focus.
  2. Adjust Compiz settings: Install CompizConfig Settings Manager (sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager on Ubuntu 18.04). Then, open CompizConfig Settings Manager and navigate to “General” > “General options” > “Focus and raise behaviour”. Change the “Focus prevention level” from “Low” to “Normal”. Alternatively, you can set it to “Smart” or “Strict” depending on your preference.
  3. Configure Krita’s canvas input settings: Go to “Settings” > “Configure Krita” > “Canvas Input Settings” and adjust the settings to your liking. You can try deactivating finger drawing/touch gestures for your tablet or disable the popup palette.
  4. Consider using an alternative window manager: If you’re using Openbox as a standalone window manager, you can modify the rc.xml file to change the focus behavior. Specifically, change the yes to no in the focus section to prevent focus stealing.

Note that these solutions might have varying degrees of effectiveness, and you may need to experiment to find the combination that works best for your specific setup. Additionally, some users reported that Compiz’s focus prevention settings can be finicky, so you may need to adjust them further to achieve the desired behavior."

Hmm, I don't think any of these suggestions are relevant in this case.

  • “Canvas Input Settings” in Krita is just a keybinding menu. Removing keybinds does not eliminate the darkening effect.
  • Changing “Focus prevention level” from CompizConfig Settings Manager didn't have any effect on this.
  • I'm not going to use an alternative window manager just to get rid of this effect, that would be too much of a hassle. I would like to use the DE that ships with Zorin OS.

Well part of me thinks that is the issue, Gnome DE. Focus moves to any new window that opens in the foreground, and Krita is a KDE (Plasma) application. Would be curious to know if this happens in KDE (Plasma).

Ok, I finally figured out how to get rid of the darkening. In Zorin Appearance settings there is an "Attach Modal Dialogs" toggle, and setting it to off gets rid of the darkening effect. :slightly_smiling_face:

Glad you got it sorted. That is another item that repels me from the Gnome DE!
