Problem with Chrome in Zorin OS 18

Sorry for my ignorance, but I just installed Zorin OS 18 and am having a problem with Google Chrome. The program installs correctly, but when I turn my computer off and on again, Chrome stops working because it can't load. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

Switch to XOrg. Logout and at login click on your username then a cog wheal appears at the bottom right corner. There select "Zorin desktop on Xorg"

How is google chrome installed? The best method is this one:

If it doesn't launch then, launch it from terminal with disabled hardware acceleration

google-chrome --disable-gpu

Thanks for replying, I tried but it says: command not found

Do you have installed google chrome as flatpak? Then the command doesn't work.

I installed from the store

Yesterday another user had the same problem. He removed the installed flatpak, installed the .deb package and everything was fine. If the .deb package doesn't open, use the given command the first time, and then disable the hardware acceleration in your browser's settings.
Are you on XOrg now?

Sorry, but I don't know what Xorg is. I don't want to waste your time.

It is a display server protocol - the default one Zorin uses is mostly Wayland, but it often makes problems.

You can test if you are on XOrg (=X11) or Wayland by entering in terminal

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

Could you provide some information about your system? Check Settings, System, About, System Details. You can copy and paste them to this forum thread.

Try Chromium instead to see if it works. It is the open source basis for Google Chrome.

Once you install it, open it, click on the hamburger menu (3 stacked horizonal lines) at the top right of the menu bar and go to Settings.

Under System:

  1. Disable Continue running backgrounds apps when Chromium is closed
  2. Disable Use graphics acceleration when available

Close Chromium and then launch it again. If it starts up then Restart your system and see if it launches. If it does, then uninstall Google Chrome and reinstall it then repeat the steps above.

If I go to the terminal and enter what you reported it tells me: wayland: command not found

Sorry, that was my mistake.

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

it does nothing

When you enter this command in terminal and press enter it should show X11 or Wayland

I installed Chromium and it works, I did as you told me, but when I turn off the computer and restart it it doesn't load anymore

wayland

Then switch to XOrg at loginscreen to see if it is better then.

how is it done?

Go to the Login Screen. Click on Your Profile so that the Password Field appears. When it is appeared, You should see a Gear Icon in the bottom right corner. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in.

For Your Issue, I would also suggest to try the .deb Version of Chrome:

The Google Chrome in the store is the Flatpak version.
Try to download Google Chrome from the official website (you should get a file ending with .deb), then uninstall the current chrome from the store.
Then, open the downloaded file to install the deb version of chrome. If it doesn't open after installing, try the google-chrome --disable-gpu command that was recommended.
If it opens, go to your Chrome settings (after setting it up, like adding your google account etc), and search for GPU acceleration. Disable it, and it should now open correctly without the need to use the terminal command.

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately it doesn't work like that either
