Hello, I've been recently having an issue where after about a day or so, apps refuse to open. This includes settings, Steam, games launched from Steam (when already opened), system monitor, and my terminal. Rebooting my PC does fix the issue, but that can get a bit annoying.
If I had to say, I think this could have occurred after the ubuntu launchpad outages. I've also suddenly gotten the issue where at times, my graphics driver 'stops working' and an HD plugin for a game refuses to turn back on. However flatpak update with a redownload of the drivers fixes it.
I have also done an update and upgrade a week or two after the outage issues to make sure everything was fine, so I'm not exactly sure what's going on. Is there anything I can do to fix the issue at all? Perhaps even a keybind that forces a refresh (short of a full restart)?
Running Zorin OS 18.1 Core, AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RTX 3070, 64GB of RAM.
Is Steam installed as Flatpak? If yes, You could try the .deb Version instead.
You use Nvidia Graphics. What Driver do You use? Does Your System runs in Wayland or X11? You can check that with the Terminal Command echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled? If Windows is still installed: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled?
Steam is installed via .deb. I haven't tried many other things other than games in Steam, Steam itself, or other preinstalled utilities though.
Nvidia driver currently selected is metapackage from nvidia-driver-580 (proprietary). Running X11.
My BIOS says it's current Secure Boot type is custom. I haven't really tweaked it so its possible that it's turned on. Fast Boot is on, although likely by default again. No other OS installed, so no Fast Start-Up in Windows at all.
''Custom'' Mode is a bit ... difficult because it can be that Secure Boot is disabled even whe not directly labeled as this. When there stands for Example ''Other OS'' then it is fine. For now let it like it is - especially because of Your Nvidia Setup.
Hi all, signed up to throw my two cents on; I was recently having similar symptoms as OP.
Fresh boot, all things running well, after 'some time' the symptoms of applications not launching presented itself, taskbar could still open menus but picking something would cause a moment of SSD activity, but no feedback.
Of all the weird things, I Just closed Discord ( flatpack version ) and suddenly things became responsive again. Might pay to double-check what's currently running when the issue presents itself?
Might be a red herring, but I'll be watching to see if it crops up again. My spare tinkering machine never had the problem, but it doesn't run much aside from the odd browser window or something small I may be messing with at the time.
System for reference; I5-6500, 16gb, nvidia 1060 6gb version with driver-580 from the software updater, Zorin Core 18.1, X11 chosen from login screen, no gnome extensions. System drive was a new SSD with clean install back on 17.3 ( I swap it out with my W10 ssd to keep them away from each other, windows fast start is disabled, couple of ntfs platter disks but that's just for my photos and general storage )
Well, I haven't got around to trying to mess with my BIOS settings, especially since they were fine before.
But I saw Patrio's reply, and ended up trying it out myself. And confirmed same issue for me it seems, closing Discord resolves the issue.
Oddly enough I'm on a different version (.deb downloaded directly from their site and updated manually). So I'm almost wondering if it's an issue within whatever they run the app on (I believe just a chromium website based application) memory leaking or doing something odd in the background?
Closing and reopening Discord is an easy enough fix compared to rebooting the whole PC. I'll probably double check it fixes things if it occurs again before sending a bug report to Discord and pray they have a human review it lol
I did see in a different thread (the gaming section here?) someone had a hiccup with discord where the window would flicker pretty bad and typing in a channel would be a little laggy, I had that but I think I was hopping around different Nvidia driver versions so something probably wasn't playing nice.
Have been running the software store version the last couple of days and haven't run into the issue.
Maybe with their new drive to improve Linux support they'll catch the cause and patch it, fingers crossed.
