Here are my questions: Is it safe to install this update?
My laptop is a Lenovo B40-30 from 2014, which originally came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. However, I have completely removed Windows and installed Zorin OS as the only operating system.
Is this update necessary? The laptop is currently working fine without any issues.
For now, I’m following the principle of "if it works, don’t touch it," so I haven’t installed the update yet.
You don't need it when you haven't windows installed. It is an update for your BIOS but you can also install it from the webpage from your manufacturer if you need it.
This update makes much problems in Zorin, here is a fix if it fails:
Please click on the title of the link, it leads directly to the fix:
You don't need the update if and only if you don't use secure boot. Secure boot can still prevent malicious programs from running at boot whether it's Windows or Linux.
Most people just consider it too much trouble to use it on Linux.
When Secure Boot is on, You could make the Update. If you turn it off in BIOS and You make then an Update Search, this Update should disappear. As an Alternative, You could make a BIOS Upate and look if this one here disappears.
Like @Forpli already wrote, was there in the Past some Issues with it. First, open the Terminal and type apt list fwupd and when it give You this Output with the Version Number it should work:
