Since i see that Zorin OS is good and i wnated to test some stuff to clarify if i want to move completely towards the new OS
My spec are intel i3 11th gen 8 core
16 GB RAM 15.4 GB available.
256GB disk space just for testing purposes.
Intel GPU integrated inside a laptop.
So i started couple of games like left 4 dead 2, warframe and couple of others i noticed that on longer period of time runs the games are crashing after reaching full ram usage.
Which i came to find here help by other users if there are ways to adjust to limit usage ram to run other applications between opened of more apps, so it can be all straight up fir normal usage of time.
I need to understand and commands for swap file adjustments too.
In which package format is steam installed? The native .deb package installed with steam installer or downloaded from steam website needs less RAM than the flatpak version.
Here is a guide about increasing the swap file and adjusting swappiness but I've never done this. Maybe others can advice you.
When the Problem is that the Games consume too much RAM, You should take a Look at the minimum Requirements for the Games and how much RAM that is and reduce the Settings for the Game.
And when Your 16GB in total are not enough, You should maybe think about to buy more RAM. The integrated GPU is another Point, too. This uses RAM, too. And depending how much it uses (You shouldbe able to check that in BIOS), the overall usable RAM shrinks, too.
And when the iGPU doesn't have much RAM, it isn't good for Gaming, too.
Unless you are playing old games that only require 8GB of RAM or less, 16GB of RAM is no longer enough, for many newer games today. Please consider the fact, the OS itself will take at least 5GB of RAM on core alone, that leaves games with only 11GB of RAM, when they need, at least 16GB of RAM.
This is why, when I bought my new computer in 2021, I made sure to get a machine, that had 32GB of RAM. Another thing to keep in mind, is your VRAM as well. Modern games also use a lot of VRAM on your GPU, if you turn up all the graphics settings. At MAX graphics settings, Doom The Dark Ages can use between 10.5 - 14 GB of VRAM at 1080p and 4K, respectively!
Were almost in the year 2026, this is my recommendations...
CPU: 8-Core 16-Thread CPU
GPU: Nvidia 5060 or better / AMDs Radeon RX 9070 or better
RAM: 32GB RAM kit
Storage: 1TB is standard, 2TB recommended
I have experienced a similar problem some time ago and fix it by adjusting the cache using a tool called Linuxtoys. It is an excelent tool to fix and perform some adjustements on linux environments. If you want, take a look on the project and test it if you want.: GitHub - psygreg/linuxtoys: A collection of tools for Linux in a user-friendly way.
There is a function in the app for Gaming, that is the one that fixed the problem for me.
Thank you all for the response, this will be enough for me to research the stuff that i need, plus i use laptop, since it will take a time until i see some mini pc for myself to connect a big TV than
And since i play some old game im enough for this, but if i play high end games, maybe next year il upgrade it.
plus i tried this ProtonUp-Qt which i putted version GE-PROTON10-25 version, but i press start, typed on search started the protonup-qt and pressed add version for steam
than version GE-Proton and than the last version, somehow and this helped me to add in steam and other games as compatibility mode, which limited usage or ram memory even lowered, when you don't need even to close the game, instead of max ram it used 10/16 gb ram, which is awesome, even im happy, that this fixed for me the issue with ram memory leak.
and that swap is ok for me that is on OS
plus every game i adjust to this version now, which is easy manual fixation for steam users, i don't know for other people will help this method too.
