Re-install default icons

I installed VidCutter on OS 17 Core from the repository and it changed all the icons in Files. I uninstalled VidCutter but the icons didn’t revert back. Comparing my installed OS with Zorin 17 on a bootable stick, I see that the Desktop file in Home is empty while on the bootable stick Ubiquiy Desktop is installed. Is that the problem? How do I get the default icons back? Zorin Appearances doesn’t help.

Much thanks,

Kate

Hi Kate,

Try this in terminal:

sudo apt install --reinstall zorin-os-desktop -y

(With acknowledgement to a post by @Aravisian)

Welcome to the Forum!

Let's check if the Zorin Icons are still there. for this, open the Terminal and install gnome-tweaks with the Command sudo apt install gnome-tweaks

After that, open it and go to the 2nd Tab. There are the Customization Options. Look if the Zorin Icons there and set them up:

Hi guys and thank you for taking the time.

I ran the commands but nothing changed. The Home/Desktop folder is still empty. Is that correct? I’ve included a couple of screenshots.

Much thanks,

Katie

Thank you for the Screenshots. For me it looks like the default Gnome Adwaita Theme is active. And You wrote that Zorin Appearance didn't helped. Let's try it with a Reinstall of it. Type in the Terminal:

sudo apt reinstall zorin-appearance zorin-appearance-layouts-support zorin-appearance-layouts-shell-core

Another Thing: Could You type int the Terminal flatpak list and post a Screenshot of the Output here? The Command shows a List of installed Flatpaks.

Next this one:

When You open the File Manager (Files) and go to home, does it look like this:

You will have another Theme and Icons but the Folders I mean and the Bookmarks at the left. Maybe You can post a Picture of it, too.

Thanks De-Lion... a couple of more screenshots for you.
Katie

Yes, sorry. I forgot a - between zorin and appearance-layouts-shell-core:

I have correct that:

sudo apt reinstall zorin-appearance zorin-appearance-layouts-support zorin-appearance-layouts-shell-core

Heck. Problem still exists.
Katie

Okay ... Maybe something is broken. Let's try the Following:

sudo apt --fix-broken install

and

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Configure
Sorry, but no. At least things are still working
Katie

Have you changed your software sources from your country locale to 'Main Server'?

I covered this in both unofficial manuals for Zorin 15 and Zorin 17.

To add a Picture of the suggestion what @swarfendor437 made:

You can find this in Software & Updates. to come to this, open the Software Updater and click on ''Stop''. Then You shoudl see a Settings-Button. click on it and then this Window should open. Go there to the first Tab.

And another Thing. You post this Picture:

These Icons are shown when like here ZorinLight-Blue is chosen?

Okay, at this Point let's get to this:

  1. Look in the Quick Settings if there is Light or Dark Mode active:

  2. Look if the ''High Contrast Mode'' in Settings>Accessability is active. If yes turn it off:

  3. In Zorin Appearance click on the Blue Circle and the light Field:

Or if You want another Color Combination, choose a different one.

How did you install VidCutter? Did this happen as soon as you installed it or after you tried to do something with it?

Also, are you sure it was really VidCutter that caused this? In the software store it's listed as a Flatpak or Snap package, both sandboxed package formats, so it's really weird it would just switch the icon theme randomly.

In any case, did you try the "Rest to defaults" button in Zorin Appearance?

If this doesn't work, can you run this command in the terminal and see if there's any output?

ls -l /usr/share/icons/Zorin*

Should look something like this, with a long listing of all the icons available, if they are still present in the system:

Thanks Swarf, and De-Leon for the screenshot. I clicked on Main Server in the drop-down and it reloaded the software cashe. And yes, my Tweeks/Appearances show Zorin Light-Blue selected.

Light mode is selected in Quick Settings. But I couldn’t access High Contrast Mode in Settings>Accessibility (see screenshot), but turned it off from the tool bar. Then went in and re-set Zorin Themes to Blue and Light Mode.

I restarted the computer at this point and the icons are back to the default. Thank you, gang.

And finally, zenzen, I installed VidCutter from the Repository, then opened it and uploaded a video to the package. VidCutter didn’t do what I required and when I saw that my icons had been changed, I un-installed the package. Clicking on Return To Default did nothing. I did run ls -l /usr/share/icons/Zorin* and all the icons did show up.

Anyway things are back to normal, except everything is now in Spanish. Hopefully I’ll be able to fix that on my own. Thanks everyone for your help.

Okay, first: Good to hear that it is noe normal. For the Language, You can go to the Settings and there are the Language Settings one Tab over the Accessability Settings. There You can add Your Language.

Again, thank you, De-Leon. Everything good here. I found the language settings, no problem.
