Recommended paid applications ...?

Hi to everyone. As we know, most software available for Linux is free to download. But to me, there are times when I'd rather go for paid options because the quality can be better and more consistent. (And to support Linux development.) So, I do have SoftMaker Office 2024 for Linux. I'm happy with it. I also bought Ukuu from TeejeeTech. I've looked at a potential PDF software purchase, but have held off because Xournal++ does do a good job, and fits in with my specific use case. And so on and on. You get the idea. So, the question is, any recommendations for paid software (or places I can shop for Linux software online) that I can use on Zorin? What's everyone's experience been? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: If this is in the wrong subforum, please move it. If not, never mind.

Due to lockdown and following on from that, working from home I needed to edit a past AS Physics paper for someone with low-vision. I plumped for Qoppa (now owned by Apryse Software) pdf Studio Pro - you get all the bells and whistles of Adobe Acrobat but a one-off payment $149 - sometimes they have special offers on, and bear in mind Adobe is a rental product and you have to pay additional rental for each add-on. I paid $109 (I think) back in 2020. Master PDF Editor is a lot cheaper at £79. I based my choice based on posts on alternative to which favoured pdf Studio Pro. It is marketed as approximately 1/5 of what you would pay Adobe.
SoftMaker Flexi PDF runs under wine but comes no where near to what pdf Studio Pro or I suspect Master PDF Editor has to offer. If you find Document Scanner too basic then I can highly recommend VueScan from https://www.hamrick.com. I opted for the Pro version. You can download a demo which leaves a watermark.
At the end of the day, it is down to what your needs are.

Thank you very much.

I also purchased SoftMaker Office which I installed on my Windows 10 PC, this linux notebook and my partner's also-Zorin notebook (replacing her windows 10 and her original Office 2003-ish install).

We just have basic Office use so don't require full Excel capability. I exchange docs regularly with clients and colleagues using Office 365 and none of us have ever experienced any discrepancy on Word docs or spreadsheets.

I also purchased Expandrive which gives 'Mountain Duck' - like abilities (if you've ever used that on Mac or PC). It connects to Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive (should you have the need) within Zorin Files. Importantly for me it also connects with FTP, SFTP, Backblaze B2 and Amazon S3 storage which is the reason I bought it for.

Swarf, I purchased a Vuescan license around 15 years ago for my Win 7 PC at the time I think, as I had a big pile of transparencies to scan for a client project (and a borrowed Nikon Professional Scanner). It was highly valuable software to me, so I can definitely recommend. I think you could set response curves, midpoints, dynamic range and all sorts. Very useful.

I'd be interested in giving VivaDesigner - desktop, server & web-based publishing program a try, but I barely do any publishing work these days.

Thank you for the informative post. Very good.

One more thing - I just checked out Expandrive. Wow. Just might get this ...

Its been really useful. One warning note - I've been unable to get it to connect to my MS OneDrive account on this new machine, I had no problem on the old PC. I must ask their support, but I'm not bothered as I don't use that account (I used to), it was just curiosity.

Follow-up question:

If I bought Expandrive, how does it come as? As a downloadable .DEB file? Thanks.

EDIT: Never mind. I went back to the site and saw they have a .DEB file.

Not specifically for Zorin, but also for macOS and Windows (the latter is unimportant :stuck_out_tongue: ) I would really like an option that would sync the same set of folders to multiple syncing services (like Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive).

They also have a repository

You mean like something like Syncthing?

Not quite, I think? I checked out the website and it looks like it does its own thing syncing between multiple computers. What I need is a way to sync multiple folders to a set of cloud storage providers (say, Google Drive and OneDrive).

If I want to do that now, I have to copy-paste or use something like rsync to keep different folders the same. I don't think you can have the same folder (on your local computer) synced to different services at the same time.

Could something like this be something you're looking for?
Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox Syncing - Insync
I remember using it a LONG time ago, so I can't vouch for anything now, but I think it's basically what you're looking for.

I couldn't tell, based on their homepage, if this is what I want. Most of these tools say they all work with Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc., but I guess my use case is niche where I want the same file across different cloud storage. But I'll comb through their help section to understand if that's doable.

Thanks for the link!

Yeah Syncthing is meant for syncthing computers it won't work with cloud services themselves. But Insync sounds more like what you're after.

@NeilW - how is Expandrive working for you? I found this: CLICK HERE.

I don't know if there's any truth to this. I have e-mailed their support e-mail.

Hopefully I will hear back soon. But again, how is it working for you? Still OK?

Thats ... odd.
All my saved connections are working fine for me (Google Drive, Dropbox, Backblaze B2, and a couple FTP accounts). I haven't had need to set up any new connections recently.

It doesn't make sense that it would stop syncing even if the company died - it wouldn't make sense to me that any of my connections would go through an expandrive server.

If I get time soon I'll set up a VM and install the deb from fresh and test if it successfully activates my license, and sets up new connections.

Thank you; that would be most helpful.

I did a search on this issue, not a lot came up. The Trustpilot page is full of woeful experiences. Their last presence on eX-Twitter is 2021.

But - there was an issue a few months ago where Google wouldn't approve permission to connect the app (I think after Google had updated their systems). This affected everyone, and was fixed - from memory this was around December '24 I think. So somebody was still working at the company then and answered my email.

Have you looked at InSync?

I've not tried it. But its Dropbox, Microsoft and Google only I think. I specifically wanted the Backblaze B2 support.

For general (s)FTP FileZilla works great.
