I am trying to build a core system for someone with an old Win 8.1 system with very limited resources. I have gotten the biggest of the issues out of the way thanks to @zenzen@Ponce-De-Leon@Forpli
I have a rather simple ask... HOPEFULLY..
The only thing I have left (and not a big thing) is I would like to re-name desktop shortcuts to better aid this person.
For example, I would like to rename the shortcut "LibreOffice Writer" to "Word Alternative", "LibreOffice Calc" to "Excel Alternative" and so on... I have sent the pertinent shortcuts to the desktop already, I just want her to be able to identify them as easily as possible.
So yeah, this is not a big Deal, she could probably get it worked out, but I would like to make it as easy as possible to transition from Win 8.1 to ZorinOs for this person.
It's not immediately obvious how to do this (for other reasons that aren't relevant right now) but it's fairly easy.
Open the file manager (Nautilus) and navigate to the Desktop. There you should have a file with .desktop extension for each shortcut that you've created. You can open it with the text editor, and change the value of the Name entry:
You might see there's a different name that what the shortcut itself uses. For example in this screenshot you can see the name of the file is "org.gnome.Terminal.desktop".
Oh, and keep in mind that this will only affect the desktop shortcut and not the name of the application when you search for it in the main menu or activities overview. You can also change those in a similar fashion if you want; the names of the respective .desktop files are stored in /usr/share/applications.
