Reorganizing Start Menu

So I am aware there are *.desktop files that can be modified, that are associated with the Start Menu and Desktop launcher icons, however it's not really clear how to move these around?

I have tried adding a Categories= to the files, but it didn't seem to change them... and most don't even have a Categories entry, yet are placed in specific locations anyways, like Programming.

The best I could do was create a new stub icon where I wanted it, then pretty much copy all the contents of an existing *.desktop file into that new one (which is kinda sub-optimal).

Am I missing something? Is there any easier way to move these icons around on the Start Menu?

There is an preinstalled Program called ''Main Menu'' with that can You create Menu Entries, delete them, make them not shown and so on.

Yes that is the app I was using to stub out a new Start Menu icon, but you can't move items around with that app nor can you drag/drop within the Start Menu itself... so as far as organizing things go, it's really a pain.

When you want to have a more flexible start menu which allows more customized settings you can install the gnome extension "Arc menu" or try "menu libre". It should work with main menu but there are sometimes bugs.
With arc menu you are more flexible because the Zorin one has some restrictions.

In Main Menu you can move icons around. You have to do it from the item pane on the right. For instance, click "Internet" on the left. Then click "Firefox Web Browser" in the right pane. Use the "Move Up" and "Move Down" buttons place it higher or lower in the list. You can also add an item but you have to add an icon to it before you can save it. You can also copy the details of an icon in one Menu and replicate it in another or create your own Menu.

I'm trying to figure out how to put a "shortcut" to a LibreCalc spreadsheet on the menu but no success so far.

I figured out the item link to a file.

I created a new menu called Finance and created a menu items for MoneyDance and a spreadsheet in it. It works.

Here's the command line format for the file link:

libreoffice --calc %U /home/user/Documents/Projects2025.ods
