So I am currently not using Zorin OS. I did not want to stop using it, but I had to because the window animation glitches were starting to irritate me. I am using Linux Mint (hopefully temporarily), because I do not have any graphical bugs in Linux Mint whatsoever (in the default X11 mode). I would like to resume using Zorin. When I was using X11 in Zorin, the window animations were glitchy (I have posted about this before). When I switched to Wayland, the window animations were normal except for some apps I had to switch back to X11 using XWayland (like MyPaint because of a brush selection bug that was present in Wayland, but not XWayland, for example). Synaptic was glitchy, too, without XWayland. Annoying. Anyway, I may have an opportunity to procure some new PC hardware soon. Can anyone chime in with what hardware works perfectly with Zorin in X11 mode only? Video cards? What? I'd like to get some real-life community feedback about this before I decide what to buy (again, if I end up buying new hardware). And while we're on the subject, can someone from Zorin Group chime in (Arytom or Kyrill) about the status of X11 for Zorin 18? Will it be improved? Or the same? I know in VirtualBox, the window glitches (flickering and duplication) are completely gone when in X11 mode. So it's gotta be hardware/drivers. Anyone ... ? Thanks.
Properly an AMD/Radeon card is what you are looking for. I got a 7900 XTX. It should work with kernel 6.8.x and up.
I have an AMD Radeon RX 6600 already. Also was on 6.8 before on Zorin.
Maybe the brand matters. I have a XFX RX 6600 with 8 GB of memory.
This is what I have. Link: XFX Speedster SWFT 210 RX 6600. Hope it helps.
Did you try upgrading the kernel? As the driver is build into the kernel with Radeon. So if there's a bug with your RX 6600 - a kernel upgrade could solve it.
I posted before about how I upgraded to 6.12. Same result.
Let me ask you - do you have any issues whatsoever with window animations and such in X11 (not Wayland) with your card? Making sure, please. Thanks very much.
I can't say. When I tried Zorin with this card it was under Wayland. But maybe waiting for Zorin 18 before using money on a new card?
Well, that's why I asked if maybe someone from the Zorin Group could comment on what to expect for Wayland and X11 for Zorin 18, so ... yeah. In any case, hope someone else can also chime in here with their experiences in X11 mode on Zorin. I'm not against waiting for 18, but it'd be nice to continue using Zorin before 18 comes out, and especially with a correctly functioning OS (graphics-wise).
On the X11 site will not happen much. The most Stuff what is happen there, is XWayland Development and some minor Bugfixing as far as I heard. So, on Zorin 18 wouldn't change much.
With Wayland it depends what Gnome Version we will get.
