Scan duplex from ADF with Brother MFC-L3740CDW doesn't work

Hello,

i've installed the *.deb driver from the brother support website.
The scanner works with simple scanning one page as I used it already with the apps NAPS2 and Simple-Scan.
CUPS also has listed the printer driver for full printing options and the set up printer works with it. It was a bit of a hassle but worked in the end.
One important thing the reason for I bought this model is the duplex scanning functionality.
I tried using the scanner by connecting it with SANE and ESCL both over network and finally with the installed brother driver over network. No way leverages the duplex scanning ability.
It isn't listed in any scanner-app and I don't know what to do.

I searched the web and found duplex scanning problem topics from similar but older printers like Brother MFC-9340CDW Duplex Scanning on Ubuntu 24.04
They often use brscan4 and brsaneconfig4 but through the driver installation I've already version 5.

Any idea on how I can get the duplex scanning function working?

I appreciate your help.
Thank you very much.

Hi, I don't know if it is a possible solution, but I would give VueScan a try. You can download it and run it without registering it to see if it does what you want it to placing a watermark on scanned images.

I purchased the Pro version a few years ago but I don't have a scanner with duplex function.

Update via Brave A.I.:

" VueScan supports duplex (two-sided) scanning through two primary methods, depending on your hardware capabilities. If your scanner has a Duplex Feeder option in the Input menu, you can enable it directly to scan both sides simultaneously. For scanners that only support simplex (one-sided) feeding, you can scan the front and back sides separately into a multi-page PDF and use the PDF | Interleave command to correctly order the pages.

Key workflows and features include:

  • Manual Interleaving : Scan front sides first using the Scan button, then scan back sides using the Scan+ button to append to the same PDF file. Right-click the thumbnails and select Interleave to rearrange the pages into sequential order (1, 2, 3, etc.). This requires an even number of pages.
  • Automatic Duplex Feeder : If supported, select Duplex Feeder in the Input mode. You can also configure Output | PDF file settings to automatically handle front/back pairs or skip blank pages during batch scanning.
  • Troubleshooting : On Windows, ensure the ScanSnap Manager or other native scanner software is not running in the background, as this can interfere with VueScan’s duplex functionality. Users have reported issues with specific models like the Fujitsu fi-6130 freezing after a set number of pages, which may require driver updates or sufficient system memory.

Well, today I tried again implementing this feature. "Something is totally wrong here" I thought.
I checked again the product description and now read that the printer doesn't have a duplex scan functionality. I was totally sure that it does. My mistake was, I checked on Amazon page and used their AI about the product. Then used ChatGPT and Grok who stated the same. They made it up. They concluded the duplex printer and mixed that in for also the scanner. My bad was not checking the product on the manufacturers website.
