Screen freeze when playing media in browser or messengers

The issue occurs only on the internal display when playing videos on YouTube or opening media in messengers. On the original kernel (6.8...), this happens approximately once every 7 videos. The only solutions are a hard reboot or locking the screen using the shortcut (Super key + L).

I’ve tried almost all other Mainline kernels. On version 6.11.8 (custom one), the issue happens less frequently, but it’s still present. However, on kernels 6.10.X, playing any first video crashes the screen entirely. This problem does not occur on other distributions, but I do not plan to switch to another distro.

It seems that this issue is somehow related to the kernel, but not entirely—it’s just unclear.

Welcome to the Forum!

Does Your System runs in Xorg/X11 or Wayland? To check that go to Settings>About and look there for ''Window Manager''. If there should stand Wayland, try it with changing to Xorg. To do that, go to the Login Screen and click on Your Profile so that the Password Field appears. It has to be appeared! after it is appeared, You should see in the bottom right Corner a Gear Icon. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in and test it.

Hey, thanks for the response! My system is running on Wayland. I did try switching to X11, and it seems like the issue went away.

However, using the system with a touchscreen became nearly impossible—scrolling in the browser doesn’t work, neither does the pen, and the system just feels sluggish compared to the smooth experience on Wayland. I guess it’s all about compromises in the end.

Let's see ...
Do You now use the normal 6.8 Kernel again or still the 6.10 or 6.11 Kernel? And do You use an Nvidia Graphics Card? If yes, which Driver You have installed? How are Your Resolution, Refresh Rate set up? Do You have Fractional Scaling active?

Thank you for your detailed response!

Currently, I'm on kernel 6.12.2 by Zabbly+. With this kernel, display freezes are rare, but certain features like power-saving profiles and high-performance modes don't function as expected.

I use a Dell 2-in-1 laptop (essentially a tablet), so there's no discrete GPU—only integrated Intel graphics.

All resolutions are okay, native also.
Refresh rates are accurate with two options: 59 Hz and 47 Hz as expected.

Fractional scaling is enabled at 150%, though turning it off doesn't seem to affect the issue.

Hmm ... I would suggest to stay on X11, change to the 6.8 Kernel and take a Look if the Issue is active. If not, okay. Should it be active, I would say deactivate Fractional Scaling. It isn't the most stable Function and could cause this Issue. At least to test, You could disable it.
