Screen tearing and Input lag (please help meeeeee)

Hey yall, I'm a newbie at this stuff so any help would be amazing. (not sure if this is a proton or a hardware issue)

So far after installation everything has worked fine, apart from my graphics.
I installed Zorin 18 with the Nvidia Drivers option, and I'm pretty sure its installed because I have the X server settings app.
But I have a few issues, while I play games and stuff I'll get screen tearing, and sometimes input lag too (especially with my mouse) but only while playing certain games.
I used proton GE and configured everything fine, and I'm pretty sure it's not just the game but just my whole display and desktop too (nothing really moves around fast on the desktop though so its not as noticeable)
I came across some results like 'use force composition pipeline' and I tried that, most screen tearing stopped but there still was some here and there, input lag was also not fixed.
I searched online for any results but most said 'use wayland', I have no clue what it is but is there a way to get it on zorin?

Basically, I think it's not proton, but the graphics itself.

Oh yeah and also my monitor's refresh rate says 59.95hz for some reason? It's been like that even on older operating systems but back then I had none of these issues so I think it's mostly irrelevant.

So could anyone help to fix it? I know absolutely nothing about display servers and all that stuff :sob:
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Test!

NB. Nvidia still needs xorg to performe decent. Radeon is the way on Linux.

NB. NB. You should be able to set refresh rate when logged into xorg.

Welcome to the Forum!

  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • Is Fractional Scaling in Settings>Displays active? If yes: disable it

Look at @Storm's Comment. But we here on Zorin recommend to use X11/Xorg in Combination with Nvidia Graphics Card because it makes in common less Issues. But if You want try it with Wayland, Your are of Course free to try it.

Ohhh so that's where I change the display server!
Interestingly, wayland actually had less issues for me, I noticed the screen tearing vanished completely. So I think I'll stick with that for now, none of my games are particularly demanding, I just want them to be smooth.

In the future when I get a new GPU I'll definitely get a Radeon, I only got this 4060 back when I was on windows 10, if I could go back in time I would definitely get AMD instead.

I'll mark this post as solved, thanks for all the help!!

Interestingly my refresh rate is still 59.95 hz, it's either that or 74.97
Its always been that way, idk why but thats not related to this topic so I'll get some help with that somewhere else
