Seemingly random freezes

Hello,

I've been struggling with this ever since I installed Zorin on my PC a week ago. This is my first time swapping from Windows so everything is quite new to me, I'm no tech expert. Please help me to troubleshoot this.
Sometimes I will have no freeze at all, sometimes it freezes a few minutes after boot, sometimes after longer.
I have two displays - my main monitor and a pen display (graphic tablet). It's always the same. The main screen freezes, the tablet screen keeps working for a while. It eventually freezes as well. If I try to power off or reboot before the second screen goes it never works. I can only reboot via forcing shutdown manually or alt+ctrl+sysrq+b

Hardware Information:

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 7 9700X × 16
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 4070
  • Graphics 1: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
  • Disk Capacity: 1.0 TB

Software Information:

I have tried several different drivers for my GPU. X.org, 580, 595, open, non-open, each feels like it's giving me the same results.

I am on Xorg desktop (selected in the login screen). Installed updates. Turned off Wi-Fi entirely and all power saving/screen locking options.

here are a few logs from the default Zorin app:

I have something from today's freeze from Ksystemlog but this post is going to be too long apparently lol

I cut up today's Ksystemlog into a shorter bit:

■■■■, that's bad news for me since I physically cannot connect both screens to the GPU without investing on some funky adapters. Only one slot for the type of cable I use. EXPO/XMP is already disabled. I have already tested on an older kernel before and it was still giving me freezes, forgot to mention that.
If it makes any difference, I usually just reboot after main screen freezes but once or twice I waited longer while I had a YT video playing. After both screens died, audio died after a while as well.

I'll run the command next time and come back with the errors.

not sure if this will help but im seeing a much newer firmware for this

if this is your motherboard try updating bios to current and see if problem presists

shows in bios F42C is current

Welcome to the Forum!

  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • If Windows is still installed: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled?
  • Is Your BIOS in UEFI or Legacy Mode?
  • What Tool did You use to create the Bootstick?
  • You wrote that Your System runs in X11. Did You tried it with switching to Wayland to check if it behaves the same?
  • Because You have Nvidia Graphics and the integrated AMd Graphics: Type in Terminal nvidia-smi and check if You get an Output. If yes, type sudo prime-select nvidia to set Your Nvidia Graphics as primary Output. You could also go in the BIOS and look for the Option to disable the internal AMD Graphics.

@Ponce-De-Leon
Hi

  • Secure Boot and Fast Boot are disabled
  • Windows is not installed, only Zorin
  • It was in UEFI. I have changed it now to Legacy and I'll see if anything improves.
  • I used balenaEtcher
  • I have ran Wayland at first, it defaulted to it. When I started experiencing freezes I swapped to X.
  • I have ran the command

Thanks, I'll see if there's any changes now!

Also, this means I am unable to use my second screen. One of my screens is connected to the GPU, another to the motherboard. I'm unable to connect both screens to the GPU now, maybe I should get an adapter. But is there no other way I can try?

Let it in UEFI. Balena Etcher is ... can be a bit ... not directly the best Choice. It has it Moments. But when You have used it and it worked, all is fine. But then let the BIOS in UEFI.

And because there are still there, it didn't helped, right?

Yes, that can be an Issue. When You connect it to the Motherboard, it uses the internal Graphics. And when You connect to the Graphics Card, the Card will be used. Because, You have mixed that up, it could lead to Freezes.

An Adapter could be an Option depending what kind of Adapter and how You want connect everything. We could try something first:

sudo prime-select on-demand

This command makes that when low Graphics Power is needed the internal Graphic is used and when more Graphics Power is needed the actual Graphics Card is used. So, it switches automatically.

You could try this but because of Your Setup and how it is connected, I'm not sure if this will help. I mean, it is worth a Try. But when it doesn't help, an Adapter could be a Way.

Gotcha, went back to UEFI.

However, no matter which one I select now (nvidia, intel, on-demand) my second screen is not being detected... How can I reverse this? I'd rather deal with the freezes for the time being.

Try sudo prime-select amd

Screenshot from 2026-10-19 22-28-45

Do You have in BIOS disabled the internal Graphics?

It is currently set to Auto. When I selected either disable or force my main screen froze within BIOS, no idea what that means.
But just as a test I swapped the HDMI cables (as in, tablet used to be connected to motherboard, now it's connected to graphics card. My main display vice versa.) and it's still not detecting the tablet (previously mentioned as second screen). I'm kinda nearing the end of my rope, ngl. I kinda need my tablet to work. Do I need to reinstall?

Well, here it depends where Your Main screen is connected to. Your Mainboard or Your Graphics Card. when it is connected to Your Mainboard it collapses because You disable the iGPU - that powers the Connectios on Your Mainboard.

You could try a Reinstall of the Nvidia Drivers. But before I have some Questions: Can You exactly describe how the Monitors are connected? I mean what Cable do You use is it ia directly Connection like HDMI>HDMI or DP>DP or are there Adapter Cables. And what connectors has Your Mainboard and what Your Graphics Card?

Also: You wrote in Your initial Comment that You have an AMD Processor. Is that correct? I'm a bit irritated because of this:

It shows Intel but You don't have Intel. And can You confirm that this is Your Mainboard:
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X670-GAMING-X-AX-V2-rev-10

If yes, check the Support Site for a BIOS Update.

Sorry, I probably didn't explain properly before.

My main screen and tablet both use HDMI cables. My motherboard has 1 HDMI slot. My GPU has one HDMI slot (the rest are displayports). At this time I cannot use other cables.

Until now, I had the main screen connected to board and tablet to GPU. When I ran the primary command my tablet stopped being detected. Then I have also tried swapping, connected the tablet to the board and the main screen to GPU. Both cases gave me the same result - main scren works, tablet doesn't. No matter what is connected where. Zorin doesn't even see the tablet as an additional display.

Hope this clears it up. What confuses me this wasn't an issue before and I can't figure out how to get back.

As for the CPU, yes, it is AMD. I was also confused about this result lol I also confirm this is indeed my motherboard. All the hardware info is in the first post, it's accurate. I've always been a bit afraid of updating the BIOS so i've never done it but if it's needed I can do it.

I would suggest now the following: When all Connections are HDMI and even Your Monitor has only one HDMI Port, I would suggest to try an HDMI Splitter Cable and connect that to the Graphics Card and then connect Monitor and Tablet to it. I know, not the nicest Way and costs Money but it should be worth a Try.

Yeah, figured it might end up having to be this way. Thank you for all of your time and suggestions.
