Settings application opens and does nothing

Settings application does not work in Zorin 17. What can I do to fix it?

I did click on it when I first installed OS, and I clicked a few things to just look around, and then it just quit. You cannot click anything. I eventually have to get it to force-stop. When I opened again, you can do nothing.

Bit of a new Linux user here. Not yet sure of the jargon and lingo to understand it all. Thanks for the help.

Hello, and welcome!

Just a couple of questions:

  • Does this happen with any other program? Firefox, Zorin Appearance, Calculator...

  • Does the problem disappear after you restart your computer? If yes, does it happen again after a while?

One thing that comes to mind is a faulty installation. Did you verify the downloaded ISO used for the installation? If the checksum does not match exactly you should re-download the ISO and try again.

Once you're sure you have a good ISO, try running a file system check.

If everything looks fine, it may be worth considering cleaning out any dust inside your computer, as well as the connectors using isopropyl alcohol. A memory test would also help discover any faulty RAM.

However, if it's only this one program in particular giving you issues, I would just re-install. It's probably faster to do and may just as well fix the problem. Although cleaning out the computer from time to time is always a good idea, so if you haven't done so in a while this may be the perfect excuse.

Have you uninstalled anything recently? I have a tendency to strip out anything I deem non-essential, and in so doing back when I first installed Zorin OS, I cut a bit too close to the bone, which caused exactly the symptoms you describe.

Thanks for the reply. Last night I restarted a few times and it always returned. I just installed Zorin, so I am trying to tweak things to my liking. This morning after turning the computer on after maybe 12 hours, Settings is running again. I am not a computer newbie, but I am fairly new to Linux. We will keep moving forward. Will let you know if it returns.
