I don't have SSD and have a desktop. I don't use hibernate I just switch it off when I'm done.
Thats another good point too, all my drives are NVME, don't need to destroy my drives with SWAP early. I remember my old computers that ran on HDD's and were slow, I heard my HDD getting hit hard on the SWAP to compensate for lack of RAM. (Back in the 1GB or less RAM days)
Well you can use Zram, this one does not create a swap file on the disk.
I found something interesting! Rhino Linux is a rolling release based on the Ubuntu development branch. It has a customized XFCE desktop and is terminal centered if you wish. you can toggle on and off flatpak, snap , and app image during setup along with virtualbox. I think it's here to stay on my old laptop.
My new desktop on kde neon did not last very long. For the benefit of members who don't have lounge access to my Other OS's thread:
"Well, what a joke KDE neon has become. I put my 6.2 drive in and watched a load of updates get installed. Rebooted. Next came an upgrade. This put SDDM back in control and even though I put the correct password in, nothing, just the onscreen keyboard kept coming up. So I went to tty screen, entered my credentials and tried startx
which failed miserably. So I looked at starting with Wayland - not present. Had to sudo apt-install plasma-workspace-wayland
then dbus launch startplasma-wayland
. This led me to a black screen. Fortunately search bar was working so I ran synaptic package manager. Installed gdm3. Chose that. Worst decision ever. Because KDE neon uses Ubuntu as it's base it pulled in Ubuntu 24.04 and the Gnome Desktop! aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh!
Time for the bin KDE neon!"
Maybe the Kernel and Your Nvidia Card doesn't like each other? the Graphics is an older one. And using Wayland with it, isn't the best Idea, too.
No I have used Wayland before without issue when I hadn't realised Zorin 17 had moved to Wayland so it is not that. They messed up the last iteration upgrade to Plasma 6.0 too.
I switched to fastfetch
yesterday actually, after finding out the neofetch
is no longer maintained. That config of yours looks really clean. Do you mind sharing you've configured those titles? Its a really nice overview.
Also, what is the difference between OS Age
and Uptime
? I already use uptime
, which gets how long the CPU/computer has been on for.
Age indicates how long ago it was installed.
Os age: days after installation
Uptime: how long the computer is up after booting.
It is clearly buggy:
Time to give EndeavourOS a spin methinks!
I heard different Opinions but okay. When You want try Plasma on Endeavour OS, do it. But there You get the same Plasma. Maybe the Arch Base makes a Difference; You have to try it.
You wonβt regret it.
I don't think so. KDE neon was supposed to be using 6.4 but corrupted my install with 6.3.5. KDE neon tends to be the testbed for new Plasma releases. I had not issues with 6.2. Guess I should have remembered past mistakes using KDE neon. One update prevented anyone to login, then they did a major upgrade from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04 and everyone who tried it their install went South needing a fresh install. Tnink it was at Plasma 6.0 at that stage or 6.1. Can't remember.
EndeavourOS:
Thought I would try and install cairo-dock, installed plug-ins and disturbed to see zeitgeist get pulled in. I think I am sticking with PCLOS Debian editions and Q4OS. Might install PCLOS Debian budgie to replace EndeavourOS. Just to add I had a busybox Ventoy error - could only install via DVD.
I also think I have become too reliant on Discover/Apper/Synaptic Package Manager. EndeavourOS is definitely not for beginners.
Additionally, I had identified the correct drive to install EndeavourOS, kde neon just had root and a swap area - it overwrote my PCLOS Debian Plasma! Aaaaarrrrrggggghhh! I have no backup either as i am out of space on my external drives.
Actually it is, if you know your ways with Pacman or Yay
Pacman -Ss steam (search for steam related stuff)
Pacman -S steam (installs steam)
-Ss you can search for packages
Downgrading a package is easy to
Downgrade nvidia and you see every driver listed in pacman/yay
So much easier then ubuntu based distros
