Singularity Desktop can be built now [Update: IT'S ALIVE!] [Update #2: It's dead, hahaha!]

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen!

A new Deskktop called Singularity can now be built. I was very excited about it. So, I tried to built it on my Debian 13 Installation. It was a bit rough - but to be fair here: I never did something like that before.

During the Compile Process, it complain a couple Times about Package Versions and Dependencies. Some, Icond install from the Debian Repos. For the Version Issues, I took the one from the Ubuntu 26.04 Repos. And it helped. I got it built and installed.

It might sould a bit arrogant of me now, but I was proud of me that I could do that. And then I thought, I could use it. But unfortunately ... it didn't worked. When I tried to log in, I putted in my Password but it didn't even appears the Desktop. It came directly to Login Screen back. I also had to reboot to log in back to my regular Gnome Session. The Passoword Field didn't work anymore when that happened.

So, I rebooted, looged in in my Gnome Session and tried it again with building and installling and all was running through. But again the same Problem. A bit frustrating but to be fair: The tested Systems were:

So far it has been tested only on Vanilla OS 2 Orchid, Vanilla OS 3 Reunion, Debian Sid, and Ubuntu 26.04 (Resolute Raccoon). Other systems may not work.

Because of the mentioned Vanilla OS 2 Orchid, I thought, it could work with Debian 13 stable but it seems Vanilla OS might have some Tweaks - and it is an immutable Distro; might be a Factor, too.

So, I decided to try it with Ubuntu 26.04 again and hopefully then I got a positive Result. I will update this Thread then. Thanks for Reading. Here are a Link to the Project Site:

Taken a look at the site but looks too much like Gnome for me. Think I will be sticking with Plasma

It looks like Gnome because it uses GTK4. The Developer likes the Gnome Style - which I do, too. But this has more Functions out of the Box and is made for Theming with css.

Looks like a beautiful rice! Let me know how it goes!

Okay, I got it! I installed Ubuntu 26.04, set it up a bit and then tried to get this Thing built. To worked almost good - except some missing Library, what was pretty annoying and Time Eating. Some Dependencies weren't there, too. But these needed only an apt install Command and that's it. So, the Built worked. The Installation, too.

But then ... I logged in and Black Screen. Only Cursor. I thought ''Come on!'' I rebooted a couple Times and logged in in the Gnome Shell but then ... It worked! Singularity was there! It is a bit clunky. but to be fair: I don't know if it is because of this early Version, Ubuntu or my Hardware. And even when it is Singularity; it is freshly published. So, that directly all is well, I wouldn't expect anyway.

Now some Pictures:

Well, that was a short Joy of Success. I wasn't able to log in anymore. Not on Singularity and not on the Gnome Session, too. I had the Login Screen and was able to type in my Password and it logged in but I only got a black Background and a Cursor - similar to the already mentioned. But this Time rebooting didn't helped. And I had the same when I tried to log in in the actual Ubuntu Gnome Session.

So, I removed everything. I didn't had the Effort to set up everything again. If it is really the Singularity Desktop only or the Combination of it and Ubuntu, I don't know. But the Experience with Ubuntu wasn't quite smooth either. It was relatively slow, especially on boot up. But anyway.

I got it at least to work for a bit and was able to get a first Impression. And that was my Goal. So, no complete Failure. And it was definetely interesting. When Singularity OS will be released, it should be a stable Experience. I guess, I will try it then as a whole System.

My next Experiment will be Debian+Hyprland/Niri+Dank Shell. Should be interesting, too.

It's too bad it only worked for such a short time. Your next project with Dank Material Shell sounds exciting, too.

I run the Niri+DMS combo on one of my Arch machines.
I was very reluctant on how it would turn out, since I'm kind of DIY guy when it comes to Linux, but it's not too bad.
If you are into tiling WM's but don't want the burden of configuring everything from scratch, it's fun to check out.

I already tried the Combo of Debian+Hyprland+Noctalia Shell what I found interesting, but I didn't set up Hyprland properly. It was more for checking out Noctalia because I saw that. The Plugin System was nice and the overall Look, too. It looks Gnome-ish but is made with QT what I found a bit ironical, hahaha!

maybe try it in ubuntu 24.04? i am testing 26.04 on a seperate drive. its not bad i do have newer hardware so install was flawless and added in all the stuff i use with a terminal(dont fear the terminal)..lol but over all solid OS...so far

You mean Singularity? That doesn't work there because of the Dependencies.
