Software Update fails on PAM Configuration

Zorin 17 Pro. Software Updater today gets as far as PAM Configuration and brings up a list of PAM profile to enable. Whether I select none, some or all it then says, "No PAM profiles have been selected for use on this system. This would grant all users access without authenticating, and is not allowed. Please select at least one PAM profile from the available list." and I can't go any further, or even cancel this without rebooting.

I ran sudo dpkg --configure -a in a terminal and that brought up a text version of the PAM configuration settings. I selected the first option and it worked.
