Software Updater failing 16.2

Hi All,

I have an issue with software updater. Th updater automatically detects the required updates and notifies me. I then ask for the updates to be installed and nothing happens other than the updater closes down. Could anyone please advise on what this could be or anything I could try?

Many Thanks

Open the terminal and copy/past;

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

please post the output of it

Thank you Storm, the partial output is below as it exceeds the maximum I can upload. It looks to me as though it updated using the command you sent me but the updater from the menu does not: -

Looks all up to date. If the GUI updater is still not showing accurate information, try

sudo apt install --reinstall update-manager

It may need some configs in your home directory reset.

Now just try

sudo apt update

and see if errors occur in the respons of the command given. I agree with Aravisian in the command above for re-installation of the update-manager should problems rise to the surface.

Thanks all,

I have run the commands suggested and now when I try the software updater it is saying "You stopped the check for updates" Is there something else I need to do please?

Many Thanks

There may be a misconfigured package or repository... Or it may just be due to packet loss on the net connection.
You could check again later. If still persistent, try running:

For package:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

sudo apt --fix-missing

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

Reboot and test...

For repository:
Please post a screenshot of your terminal results for sudo apt update (You can use the page up / page down keys onyour keybaord to scroll the terminal output)
OR
Of the "Other software tab" in Software & Updates application.

If you want to, you can also clean up those directories... they should have been removed when the packages were uninstalled, but likely contain files that weren't properly removed... I find this is common when uninstalling fonts, it leaves behind a .UUID file that you have to manually remove, then remove the now-empty directory.

Thanks all for the help so far,

I have now established why the software updater says it has been stopped.

In the software update GUI I changed it from the UK where I am am to the Main server. Since then the settings on the GUI show as Custom updates not all updates.

If I change to all updates it then tells me the software is up to date as I would expect as its been manually updated with the terminal commands provided.

However whatever I do I cannot get it to change permanently to all updates it reverts always reverts back to Custom.

Is it possible to correct this?

It does not need "correction." You altered the configuration from the default to a Custom Setting so it is now "custom", not "broken."
It will still show you all available updates from the Main Server.

Thanks Aravisian,

I will wait and see when there are new updates available. I have found an older post that indicated the same as you are stating that the updater is only doing what it has been told to do.

I am therefore assuming it is impossible to revert it back to all updates from custom, which would be somewhat more convenient for me. Is my assumption correct?

Many Thanks

Aside from reinstalling everything, it is. I agree with your point of view on this. Once you customize the settings, it will appear as "custom" - and this can be confusing.

So, even if you set all settings to exactly as they were at default, you did so as a Custom Action and it reads as "custom".
When I first started using the OS, this threw me for a loop, too.
I kept trying to fix it, until I realized that it was not broken.

What matters, though, is that the updates pull through correctly and your settings, as described, should do nicely. You do want to be on the Main Server, since regional servers can be missing packages or get slower updates or partial updates at times.
In the end, I think that reminding yourself that there "is no spoon" is the best thing you can do.

Thank you Aravisian for all your help and taking the time to explain, it's much appreciated, regards Gary
