Hi,
It is a while since I have posted here but have just installed 17.3 core on my old 2009 iMac that would not work with anything newer than High Sierra. The installation went well and wireless, bluetooth, camera, printing over wifi and even the DVD drive all are working fine.
The only annoyance is the Mac startup sound that I cannot get rid of. I used to have some lines I could use in Terminal on the iMac "sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%01" but Zorin terminal does not recognise sudo nvram.
I don't want to waste people's time on this as the iMac is working better than I could have hoped but if anyone has come across this before I would love to hear any possible solutions. Many thanks.
To be precise: the Startup Sound is the one from Your Mac and not the one from Zorin, yes?
Correct. Thanks for the reply.
Disable Mac Boot Sound in Linux
Disabling the Mac startup sound after installing Linux can be challenging as the sound is part of the Mac firmware. However, you can try using a USB-booted macOS to mute the sound. Boot into macOS Internet Recovery or install macOS on a USB stick, then run the command sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%0
in the Terminal to disable the sound permanently.
Alternatively, if you have access to macOS, you can also use the StartupSound.prefPane utility, which can be found in System Preferences under the "Other" section. This utility allows you to manage the startup sound settings more easily.

Did you take a Look in Your BIOS if there is maybe an Option to turn it off?
Disable Mac Startup Sound
Mac computers do not have a BIOS; instead, they use a firmware called EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) or UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). The startup sound on a Mac can be disabled through the System Preferences or using Terminal commands, not through the BIOS.
Have had several Macs recently - only way that I was able to get the startup sound to change was within the MacOS; just lowering the system volume.
If you have a MacOS installer - boot that up, get to the install screen and just lower the volume. I've done that in the past for mine and works. Haven't gotten it to change through terminal, though.
I've got an iMac late 2015 currently, startup sound is low.. I haven't tried recently of changing sys volume in Zorin and booting to see if anything changes though.. it's kind of quiet when it starts, I must have had low volume in system settings through MacOS..
Hey one thing you might want to try, if you want to kick around with the MacOS, is the OpenCore installer - had this iMac running the new Sequoia OS for a little while, updates and all. Only thing, though, is being a little older on HW means it's just a tad slower on response.. SSD helped but, still just a quad-core i5
The last time I used MAC OS in schools, they were quacking at us lol. Imagine hearing the quack sound repeating 5 times in a row now, maddening!
Early 80's and early 90's non power Mac's had the simple ding boot up sound. I must admit, I did enjoy the boot up chime of the late 90's power Mac's though. I don't know what bootup sounds Mac's use now days, I haven't used aa Mac since the Power Mac G3 days.
Thanks for that suggestion. I did try that before I posted this but it did not seem to work. However, I may try it again. Thx again.
Sorry, I did not realise the reply is not linked to a specific suggestion from someone else in the thread. I tried with a MacOS USB stick but not sure if i got as far as the install screen. I did not want to make a mistake and reinstall Mac OS. Will have another look at it. The sound is quite loud as soon as I press the start button. I know it is an iconic sound but I would prefer to get rid of it.
I have also played around with Open Core and have a 2008 Mac Pro running Sequoia. Agreed, it is a bit slow but works ok.
Thanks guys. I have tried both suggestions. I put a a MacOS USB boot drive in and started to that. Then in Utilities I opened up terminal but the command sudo nvram was not recognised. Secondly, when trying to get to the install page and then lowering the volume this did not have any effect I am afraid. Thanks for trying guys.
I suppose I could try installing Mac OS onto an external drive, connected to the iMac and then try changing the settings?? What does anyone think to that?
Sounds like a plan! Pun intended.
That would definitely work - as long as you get to something that lets you control volume. I'm surprised it wouldn't let you in Recovery?..
Thank you all for reading and replying to my post. I loaded an external hardrive with MacOS and was able to run the sudo nvram SystemAudioVlume=%01 command, which has completely muted the startup chime in Zorin 17.3. Issue solved. I am not sure how to close this issue but if I don't manage it could one of the administrators please advise me how to do so, or do it for me?
Noice! Might have to give this a try myself
Marking it as 'solved' would do the trick though - after a while it'll be closed due to time and no responses.
Glad to hear you got it working!!
I think yoh need to go bacj to the first post and mark it solved. I (and you) can edit the post title.
