Some programs will not initiate from Menu or Taskbar

Today found the Terminal nor Firefox do not show from Menu, Desktop or Taskbar, other do work.

They do work in VirtaulBox but no the primary script.

Have all updates until last night Aust time.

EDIT:

Got it open with Ctrl Alt T but still not any other way.

Can you please check in /usr/share/applications and see if there are .desktop files for Firefox and Terminal (gnome-terminal or xfce4-terminal)?

Neither are in the primary system but in VB there is just xfce-terminal.desktop.

You should be able to just make copies of those .desktop files and place them in your primary systems /usr/share/applications directory. It may be easier than making new desktop files.

Since you are copying to a system directory, sudo must be used.
