I've been primarily using Windows past 26 years, Linux was mostly basic usage on some remote machines. I've decided to let Windows go and try something new.
I've installed Zorin Core 18.1 Core (kernel 7.0.0-28-generic), so far I like it, feels lightweight and snappy which is what I was looking for. But there are a number of quirks that I've noticed, wonder what can be done about them, wonder if they are OS problem or more like program-specific issues.
First of all, this OS is marketed as a Windows replacement, which I think does quite well. However, I am surprised that the default keyboard layout switching shortcut is not alt+shift as on Windows, since you copy Windows start menu and other things, this is literally asking for it. Moreover, I have not found any GUI element where I could set it to alt+shift (EDIT: I found it buried in Keyboard Shortcuts, but I would rather see it in the Keyboard configuration straight out)
I find that the number on notification badges on apps in the taskbar is completely random. F.e. I use Franz messenger. When I receive a message, number 4 appears on its badge. I also sometimes see a badge with '1' on Files, but it is not notifying me of anything (or anything I would know of). Regarding Franz, the app has a tray icon but when I click/double click it, the app windows does not show up. Same goes for Claude application - clicking on tray icon does not bring up the app window. On the other hand - this seems to work for Signal.
Next thing I've noticed is that when I have music on through Spotify app, the monitor never goes off even though I've set it up to do so after 5 minutes. The same goes when I have Firefox running with a youtube video that is paused (and on a tab that is not even in the foreground)
I have not found a way how to change the desktop icons size (would like to make them smaller).
I had some problems with Bluetooth (resolved in Hardware section). But when I look at available devices, I see several of these devices (well headphones) being present multiple times.
Also, I have a Jabra Evolve2 65 headset. When I go to Sound settings menu, in the output I can see Jabra once as Headset, second time as Handsfree. The microphone is set to my webcam's mic by default. If I switch the input device from webcam to Handsfree Jabra Evolve2, it automatically switches the output device to Handsfree Jabra Evolve2 as well. But then the headset sounds badly (I guess some profile for making calls?). I haven't tried making calls so far, will need to test it.
