Yes well, that is why I prefer ALSA as you know. ![]()
Hi @zabadabadoo
Do you know how to uninstall PulseAudio volume control? I have read this is not straightforward and the simplest option is to switch off in PulseAudio. Would you agree?
Pulse Audio was standard with Z17 not Pipewire now with Z18. But read Pulse Audio is tied to systemd and removal could cause system breakage. Ref:
Others here may wish to advise regarding the running of Pulse Audio alongside Pipewire and whether the combination is proven problematic generally or just on some PC's or Macs.
Also can Pulse Audio be added/removed without fear of DE damage now Pipewire is the standard backend in Z18?
I guess you could employ Synaptic Package Manager to non-destructive test what else would be removed if you mark Pulse Audio for removal, without taking that final action to actually remove. Any other suggestions?
What I have done in the past was use a suggestion on askubuntu that got zero votes but it worked for me. You need to chown ownership of /etc first in order to make a new folder called 'pulseoff'. Next you may need to chown 'pulse' folder in order to drag it into the 'pulseoff' folder. The only issue then is with updates to pulse audio will present a warning so you need to tell the system to ignore updates for pulse audio. I then used Synaptic Package Manager to install all ALSA packages including apulse but excluding OSS and JACK plugins. I then installed QasMixer, QasConfig, and QasHctrl.
Thank you for your response. Unfortunately I am a complete novice with Linux and I don not understand what your suggestion. I installed PulseAudio volume control as it was advised on the Zorin help page. However I have decided to perform a complete reinstall of OS 18 which has removed the PulseAudio Volume control app from my system. I currently have the sound configuration set as analogue surround 2.1 which produces sound output. If I change to analogue stereo output, there is no output. I guess I will leave at is for now.
So long as the sound is as it should be I would not mess. ![]()
I am returning to this subject as I have recently started using Cider in order to access my Apple Music Subscription. My iMac is a mid 2014, model 14.4. I have previously stated that with the speakers set to internal there is no output. If I select either 2.1 or 4.0 surround sound in sound settings, there is output. Using Cider sound is heard through the left speaker only. I have looked into this and it appears to be a known issue which appears to be unresolved. Has anyone been able to resolve this issue with iMacs?
Doing a search came back with this:
" A known fix for similar problems on iMacs involves modifying the PulseAudio configuration file to ensure proper channel mapping.
To resolve this, you can edit the file /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf.common and add the following configuration just above the [Element PCM] section:
[Element Master]
switch = mute
volume = ignore
[Element PCM]
switch = mute
volume = merge
override-map.1 = all
override-map.2 = all-left,all-right
This adjustment helps ensure that both left and right audio channels are properly recognized and routed to the speakers. After making this change, restart PulseAudio or reboot your system to apply the settings.
Additionally, verify that the audio output is correctly routed in the PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol ). Check the "Playback" and "Output devices" tabs to ensure the correct device is selected and that the volume levels for both channels are balanced and not muted. You can also use alsamixer in the terminal to check and adjust the PCM and master volume levels, ensuring they are not muted and are set to the same level on both channels."
To edit the file, start with:
sudo nano
Hi @swarfendor437
Thank you for your advice. Forgive me if I am wrong, I believe Zorin OS 18 uses pipewire instead of pulse audio.
Best regards
It does use pipewire true but you could use Timeshift to take a snapshot of your system, then purge PipeWire and replace with Pulse Audio:
