Spotify not loading in Zorin Os 18 Core

Hi all, I am back for another taste of Zorin and have managed to get Zorin 18 loaded up on a 2009 iMac and it works pretty well. Even got the iSight camaera and the DVD drive working! I tried to load up my programmes and got stuck with Spotify. I tried both the Flatpack and the Snap versions and both install slowly but then when I go to open them I get a black square and then it disappears. Both Flatpack and Snap should be enabled buy default in Zorin 18 so I am not sure what else I can do. Anyone got any ideas please?

Hi, I personally would go for the Debian method. I don't like Snap or Flatpak as both are Bloatware and are not integral to the system. One of the first things I do with any OS that has either Flatpak or Snap installed is to remove them. Scroll down the page in the following link and use the copy button to copy the commands into a Terminal, but first remove the packages you have installed:

Thx for the suggestion. I appreciate you trying to help me. I copied the two messages and a spotify icon appeared in the applications list but when I clicked on it a black box opened up and then disappeared without opening the app. I cannot delete theis icon. I am afraid I am not very good with terminal. What do I need to put in terminal to get rid of this installation as it will not work?

If you want to remove it:

sudo apt remove --purge spotify-client

Did you first remove the Snap Version before installing the .deb client?

I think I did. Sudo apt remove Spotify?

It would have been snap remove spotify.

Snap Packages are isolated from the system, only present when mounted and can take priority. So if you have both installed and try to launch one, the Snap Package version and the .deb package version can bounce off of each other.

Thx Aravisian. I will try and delete all versions and then try Swarfendors suggestion again. I think I also tried the Flatpack version. Would that be sudo apt remove Spotify?

That would be flatpak remove spotify

But, please check what the Actual names are of the packages. I do not use flatpak or snaps, due to their storied problems, so I cannot test or check this.
You can, however:

flatpak list

That will list all flatpak packages you have installed, including spotify if present - use that name it gives.

snap list

Same as the above.

All clear now. Will reboot and then try Swarfendors suggestion again.

This is what I get when I put the first command into Terminal:
deb https://repository.spotify.com stable non-free

Which command is the first command?
The output you showed is for an APT .deb package, not Flatpak or Snap.

It did not work again. Just a black box with Spotify at the top that disappeared as soon as it appeared. The commands I used were what Swarfendor listed:
url -sS https://download.spotify.com/debian/pubkey_C85668DF69375001.gpg | sudo gpg --dearmor --yes -o /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/spotify.gpg
echo "deb https://repository.spotify.com stable non-free" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list

and then:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install spotify-client

This seemed to go through ok in terminal but failed to open the app.

What does terminal show when you enter

spotify-client?

Have removed it again. Maybe I just use the web version. Just frustrating not to be able to complete the task but I don't want to waste any more of your time guys.

Thanks to all three of you for trying to help me. The Zorin Community is great!

I am reporting issues as much to try and make sure Zorin 18 issues are flagged up. Another issue I have encountered is that the pictures in Settings/background are not loading up properly. They are flickering when I move the mouse and are not completely visible. I loaded one of my own pictures into that folder and all was fine with that one. This is not something I need help with but thought I would flag it up. Could be some incompatibility with the 2009 iMac I am using.

This sounds a bit like your description of the Spotify icon.

What Graphics card is your Mac using?

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

Tesla arch, I think. If Spotify is an Electron Built application, it would send calls for OpenGl that the older card can support.
I believe you already ensured you are on Xorg (X11) not Wayland. You might try echo 'export ELECTRON_DISABLE_GPU=1' >> ~/.profile in terminal to add that parameter to your profile, reboot, then test if Spotify can launch.

My system is Wayland.
