Steam not launching

Hello everyone, please i'm new to the linux community and i've installed steam but it's not launching. Please what do i do??? (i run zorin os 17 pro)

Two things to try,

Which steam did you install?

I installed the one from the store called "steam" originally and encountered similar issues I then uninstalled it

The one called "steam-installer" once I installed that I've had no issues.

"Steam is a Flatpack" it's designed as a multipurpose file/app to be used on different Linux distros.

*steam installed is a system package" designed for Zorin OS

Confusing but yeah let me know if this helps you otherwise a secondary fix (which I don't recommend unless your certain it's not the first one)

Would be to log out, click on the password but on your lock screen,

Then click on the gear and look for X11 then login as usually after clicking it.

I've had a similar thing happen before.

If you launch steam from a terminal (just "steam"), it may tell you that it's just getting an update (which can seem like it's doing nothing for a very long time when launched from an icon/shortcut in Linux, but it will still appear in the process list), and if there's not an update, it may tell you what's wrong through an error message.

Ok I saw something on another forum post kinda like a code to run on terminal and after running the code it downloaded some files and now steam runs perfectly fine. p.s I use the flatpack version of steam and the XD11 window manager..

Can you please say what code helped you?

I've forgotten the actual code but here's a link to the forum page that helped. Steam won't launch anymore on Zorin OS 16 Core

You can easily find it out when you enter
"history"
in terminal. Then your last commands are listed.

flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam

I've been through this myself, & that is how I solved it. In an effort to make this process more convenient, I created a text file, & put the following in it...

Then I made the file executable, so it does this when launched...

Choose "execute in a terminal" & it will launch the GUI for you.

I also went into the file properties to change the icon to Steam as well...

I placed the icon on the desktop.

Hello everyone, sorry I haven't replied to all the comments you guys made I've been very busy, we just resumed second semester in my school (I'm a university student) so it's been kinda hectic for me lately. So the thing is the flatpack version of steam ran well at least but. It was using up too much system resources, even the games I installed were all lagging so I deleted the flatpack version and installed the debian version of steam cos I saw in another forum post that the flatpack version uses a lot of system resources compared to the debian version.
So now after reinstalling steam (.deb version) Its not launching anymore.

I hope things calm down on the school front. University can be pretty stressful!

If you're on the debian version instead, the "steam" command now actually exists in terminal.

Let us know what running steam through terminal outputs.

It'll either be an error or an update.

Thanks a lot chronosJ I'll do that when next the power comes on.
