I searched the forum and a few years ago there seemed to be a solution to change the size of the main menu. But it doesn't work for me. So, is there a way to make the standard menu bigger? Or at least start with "all apps" instead of those categories?
I thought xfce had this functionality, where you can drag the menu up and expand to the right should you need to? Remember this is Gnome you are talking about. You could always use 'Main Menu' (aka AlaCarte) to edit the menu and move apps to categories that suit you.
Another option might be to install a grid like menu, can't remember if this is possible or via an extension (My PCLOS Debian Plasma menu):
I do not use Gnome, either. But most Zorin Core users should be able to define this one.
Yes, WhickerMenu does this; there is a handle to grab and resize. Indispensable, in my opinion.
The only way I ever affected the Menu Size on Zorin Core or ZorinMenu was by changing default sizes for elements within the menu in the .css for the menu extension. And I am not sure if that works anymore on Gnome 43.
No the grid is a bit like MacOS style, which I think is only available in Pro (Appearance) it is separate from overview of what is open.
You can get a grid menu using the theme from Appearance here:
I find the last layout bizarre - you have to click on three dots top left for the panel to appear and then click on the grid (which is on the right not the left) on the panel to view the grid menu. Reminds me of MS two click method when learning Microsoft Office Professional!
Was going to suggest using Zorin Appearance to pick a mini-grid based menu (which is what I personally use on my Zorin install; I like having access to apps all at once - it makes things simpler to navigate), but @swarfendor437 beat me to it. Yes. Go ahead and try using Zorin Appearance to pick the menu layout that has all apps laid out in a mini-grid format. You can't change the size, no, but it's bigger and wider than the default menu. Hope this helps. Good luck. EDIT: I have also posted about issues with the default menu. Time will tell if the Zorin Group will incorporate my feedback into Zorin OS 18, but I'm a bit doubtful about that prospect when it comes to the menu. But who knows if the Zorin Group will surprise us all? EDIT # 2: Oops. I guess @swarfendor437 didn't exactly suggest the same thing as I did, but still. (That's what I get for skimming posts.) Yeah. If you're able to (assuming you have the Pro version), pick the Windows 11-like option. That's what I use. Or download Extension Manager, disable the Zorin menu, and install the ArcMenu extension. That'll give you more control over what you want to change. Good luck.
What?! Gee ... wow. Well, I stand corrected then. Thanks. Wow. EDIT: Wait a minute. ArcMenu is supported. Arc Menu is not. So yes. ArcMenu should still work just fine. I just double-checked. Interesting. I didn't know about Arc Menu. I can see how/why you came out and said it was "unsupported." @swarfendor437
I suspect a Gnome Dev issue who don't want people to use Extensions. As always Gnome Devs espouse "We know what's best for the user". So you can see how difficult it has been for Team Zorin to make a working Zorin Desktop based on Gnome.
Yet another reason why I've suggested to them (the Zorin Group) they consider switching desktop environments (or even coming up with their own; that would be awesome, but alas, not exactly feasible for them and their current size) ...
"Ex-Extensions
Occasionally over the years, some extensions were removed.
The following list is not complete, but limited to cases that
are notable for some reason; either the removal happened
relatively recently, or the extension used to be particularly
popular in the past.
alternate-tab
Lets you use classic Alt+Tab (window-based instead of app-based) in GNOME Shell.
This extension is obsolete since GNOME 3.30, see this blogpost
for further details."
You could use the Gnome Extension ArcMenu - GNOME Shell Extensions. That is a Startmenu like the Zorin one but offers multiple Layouts and You can change the Size. The normal Zorin Layout is there available, too. So, you could use that, and change the Size.
That is not quite right. There are 2 Arcmenu's. You have the unsupported one and the one that I have linked above what is supported. You have to look at the Developer Name. That from LinxGem33 is not available anymore. That from andrew_z is.
