Sudo apt install synaptic

For the record, I recommended this to you already. I would have given up by now and reinstalled.

No you told me to reinstall the OS which is Zorin ....

...
Because you still had synaptic open when you tried to run the install command.

Close the terminal.
Close Synaptic.

Open the terminal. Run the command.

Apt can only perform One Lock at a time.

I do not recommend Reinstallation of the OS at this time.
As far as Reinstalling XFCE - We are doing that with the command above- but doing so without creating a Fresh Start.

OK looks like it reinstalled XFCE as I have no task bar but that can be fixed .... now to try synaptic .... now this is getting stupid .... still no synaptic .... wait a minute do I need to restart XFCE ????

There is No Reason... at all.. That reinstalling XFCE would remove your taskbar. It doesn't make sense.
It makes No Sense.

I'm calling it a night.

No problem .... how about just deleting FXCE intirely and reinstalling .... I don't mind installing everything back .... no big deal after all I caused this mess ....

OH fudge .... I have a task bar it was just hidden .... I'm so sorry I forgot I did that .... but synaptic is still MIA

You are not, though. Quite the contrary.

On Windows, everything is standardized to One system. While it is certainly possible to delete things that can mess other things up, Windows takes steps to control you to ensure you usually don't.
Linux is more Free; and Linux has options for other environments and systems. This makes it easier for the user to control the system, but also easier to make mistakes.
Unlike Windows, on Linux, there are times when any user must slow down and be sure of what they are doing. Having the control also means, being in control.

It's a little more broad and a quick guess on my part - just to ensure you have all the required app armor status.
The other thing I think we should so is ensure your home folder has all the correct permissions (change $USER to your actual username):

sudo chmod -R a+rwX,o-w /home/$USER

Yes I believe that is my biggest problem .... I'm like a bull in a china closet ... that and to many years devoted to M$ .... if I was going to do something wrong it would as you said tell me or wouldn't let me .... on Linux it is like "oh my ... did you just do that" ....

I know we can sort this out cause I was over on Gnome this morning playing around with synaptic and it is great .... after you showed me how to use it .... already downloaded a different screenshot app and it transferred it over here to XFCE .... so if nothing else I can download stuff on Gnome and have it transfer to XFCE ... LOL

mike@mike-ROG-Strix-G731GT-G731GT:~$ sudo chmod -R a+rwX,o-w /home/mike
[sudo] password for mike:

 That's okay Frog your not alone!!!

2nd thing your intelligence is never at issue partner ...Thank goodness we have a learning curve with Zorin.

Yea but a much bigger thanks is we have people to help us out ....

I remember 15 years or so ago when I tried Linux I went to a forum and asked a question .... no one answered until 3 days later after I bumped up my question someone curtly replied .... "google it" .... I kid you not that is exactly what they said .... my response .... can't repeat it here but I didn't have to worry about any more questions as I was banned ... LOL

I know that with 'Ubuntu 18.04 commands changed to:

sudo apt install

But I still prefer:

sudo apt-get install

which still works.

On a side note I installed MultiSystem in Zorin 16 Core and forgot I needed to install xterm to install it. Whilst impatiently waiting to add a Pearl Linux .iso to memory stick it appeared to hang for quite a while and I inadvertently decided to close the terminal window that was working on the operation. My solution? Stacer.

https://oguzhaninan.github.io/Stacer-Web/

However the PPA method did not work for me as I was prompted to install via Software, which I did which was good to see as at Zorin 15 it wasn't in the Software channel. I selected the option to remove packages check marked MultiSystem and removed it. Did a reinstall and it said it was already there. What had I done wrong?
I should have rebooted!

Whether using Terminal or Stacer, after you remove a package, reboot!

Yes that is one thing I keep forgetting to do is reboot .... I think because I am just about always in split screen windows .... I find that much easier to add photos and other things to a post on the right side of the screen from something on the left side of your screen .... like right now I have the Zorin forum loaded on the right side and my Home Folder on the left so I can transfer anything either way ... LOL ....

You can do the same thing using the terminal which makes it much easier to copy and paste commands and then copy and paste the results (in this case) back to the forum .... I absolute love this feature in both XFCE and Gnome ....
