Ever since i got rid of my 1080Ti a few years ago, I've just gone for mid-range GPUs. Like the RTX 3060 for example, relatively cheap with decent performance.
I have heard that AMD GPUs are much more user friendly with linux distributions. I am now considering trying out a high-end AMD GPU. I just need to be able to play video games with a minimum amount of stutterhing.
I don't know the AMD world too much, but from what ive heard - the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX is the equivalent to the Nvidia RTX 4090 right? Or atleast as highend as it can be?
There's this deal i can go for, where i pay a monthly amount for the GPU. After 24 months, i can switch to another GPU and so on. Doing this saves me around €200, pretty good imo.
Are there anyone here that runs any AMD GPUs? I'm just curious to know what its like with drivers, and if there's anything i need to consider or think about before i order this.
I see your looking to get AMD's flagship offering. The great thing about Linux, is AMD drivers are in the kernel. Having said that however, thats a brand new card, and will not likely be in Zorin's 6.8 kernel, unless you install a later kernel.
This post teaches you how to do that BTW.
Another thing to keep in mind, Zorin OS 18 will release within the next few months, and it will come with a later kernel as well. You could buy your new card, while stock quantity is there, prior to the Christmas rush, and just wait to use it as well, its up to you.
I'm an Nvidia user personally, thats what I always stuck with, especially with my laptops built in 3080. Yes, there are AMD users on this site, you'll have to wait to hear what they say.
If your asking me what I would do in your situation? I would buy that flagship card now, and then wait to use it when Zorin OS 18 comes out. For the record, thats what I did, when I bought my new computer in 2021. Once OS 16 came out, I installed it, had the kernel I needed, and I was happy as a clam.
I currently have a 7900xtx and it ran perfectly fine on 6.8 when I had done initial testing. I'm currently running a newer kernel, but I haven't noticed a great deal of difference. And yes, not having to worry about installing different drivers? It's a dish that I keep eating and it's so good I don't even realize that I've been eating it for years.
Not sure if that part makes sense. I'm keeping it in, though
