This stopped the file manager opening

Continuing the discussion from How to configure VNC in Zorin:

Just a warning, to not follow these linked instructions, it stopped my 'files' app working and reset the desktop back first time user, after I uninstalled/removed and restarted the PC.

I'm still looking for a good VNC and RDP solution, Remmina and tiger don't do it for me.

I'm not familar with this so I can't help you. If you search for instructions please look for ones that are suitable for ubuntu 22.04 which is the base for Zorin 17. Other ones may not work.

When You scroll down, @swarfendor437 links another Tool:

Did You tried this?

I can see how... those instructions... for some baffling reason, say to Install the Ubuntu-Desktop; which would replace Zorin Desktop.

Hi there, thanks for your reply
I had a 'timeshift' image that I could restore from, so not a 'biggie',

But I am not sure if that has fixed the issue 100% > because

  1. the other Zorin PC doesn't show up in the files app automatically (as it did before) I need to us ethe "Connect to Server" box to get there. But do have full access to those shared folders/files.
  2. Remmina can't RDP into that other Zorin PC either.
  3. That other Zorin PC was also restored from a timeshift' image and has everything back to previous state, including the RDP and automatically displaying the main Z PC.

Q. Is there a way to just reintall the 'Zorin Desktop' part without doing a complete reinstall??

Yes, in terminal, you can run

sudo apt install --reinstall zorin-os-desktop

If you did a timeshift... I would think that any configurations you had should have been restored. And the Ubuntu specific desktop items should no longer be present.

Haha this worked for me, answering my own Q.

sudo apt install --reinstall zorin-os-desktop

But Remmina RDP is still not connecting from main to 2nd. But ok vice-versa.
However, the problem I had with tigervnc (see other post) may be responcible for the Remmina RDP issue now.

Hi there, thanks for your reply
I checked this list of instructions at that link, and it too has an instruction about installing an different desktop (which was what stuffed me up with he tigervnc instructions)

sudo apt install xfce4 xfce4-goodies

So is this one safe?
cheers CD

You are correct; that is a Different Desktop Environment.

I read the link and that guide is for installing on a Headless system - a server - that is accessed via terminal and does not have a GUI.

Both are "safe" - but can result in completely unexpected or unwanted results.
So I recommend you do not run the XFCE installation command.

Hi there, thanks for your reply.
I will try that later on, after I restore proper connection through plain RDP (as it was before the VNC hassle earlier).
