Topton L4 umpc WiFi help

Hello,

I bought a Topton L4 umpc and the only thing that didn't work with the zorin install of 16 is the WiFi device. It doesn't even show in the hardware so it's obviously not supported. I did a search in the forums here but wasn't able to find an answer.

If anyone knows more than me, there is a good chance that 99.99% of you do, maybe you would know how to get the WiFi working on it?

Hello and welcome to the forum

Could please issue this command in terminal and copy/paste the output?

lspci

I'll have to manually type it into the browser as that copy/paste won't work because the WiFi doesn't work.

From your keyboard
ctrl + alt + T
to open terminal.

The type,
lspci

Yeah... those commands won't work. Thanks though. Still working on the other computer and will have to hand create the output since the WiFi isn't working on the laptop in question.

Oh nelly that's a lot of output. Maybe a screenshot would be better?

A screen shot will not be useful.
Please select the whole output and copy and paste in your reply.

I'm guessing you're not understanding the point of the WiFi not working. How would I copy/paste into my reply when it's on another machine that is having an issue with its WiFi connection? Perhaps I should adjust my earlier value of 99.99% to 99.98%

  1. Copy and paste the output into a text file.
  2. Save it on a USB key.
  3. Copy the text file from the USB key to a machine with WiFi connection.

Unless you have no spare USB key, the above scheme should work.

It took me a bit but I was able to find and borrow my kids thumb drive.

I read through the output.
I could not see any WiFi module listed.

Just an off shot, do you see any physical switch (or a spcial key) on your machine to enable/disable network?

Also check if you are not in airplane mode.

FYI, the machine has w10 preinstalled. I'm using the zorin live usb* environment to test things out before commiting. Yes, the WiFi works fine under windows 10. There is no physical switch (good idea though).

*(My usb drive was being used already which is why I had to go find another)

Lucky you have a resourceful kid.
I wish I have one

My biggest fear is that this WiFi module is designed to work only in Windows. I have encountered couple of such devices in past.

Is it possible for you to boot into Windows and open Device Manager and jolt down the property of this WiFi module? That would facilitate our trouble shooting a lot.

Further troubles...

Oops, I did not notice that... :scream:

It's listed as...
Realtek 8821CU Wireless LAN 802.11ac USB NIC

Meaning? It's too "C.r.a.p.p.y"???

I am afraid it is not included in Linux kernel.
You have to compile its driver from the source.

Oh fun.
Never done a recompile before.
