hi - my trackpad & external mouse does not function when i accidentally press both letter keys while typing....
For example - When I type letter "T" or any other letter for instance, part of my finger touches or presses the next letter to "T" i.e "Y". When this keeps repeating for other letters, the trackpad & external mouse stops functioning. The "arrow" shape cursor turns to "Ⅰ" shape.....the curson moves, but its non-functional.... Except for this 2 things, the rest of the machine is working fine even at this point of time...
So I have to log out and log in each time just to make the trackpad & external mouse functional, which is irritating
I have been doing this for more then a week now, thinking there's some hardware/technical issue with my trackpad & external mouse...but i was wrong.
When i make those same typing error (i.e fingers accidentally touching to the next letter) on Window or Linux mint (cuz i have 3 partitions with 3 different OS), I do not face any such issues of non-functioning of trackpad & mouse....even if i do it intentional there is no such issue with the other 2 OS, except for Zorin OS....why ?? and pls advise solution. Log out & in is frustrating and time wasting...
Accidental Key Press Freeze on Trackpad and Mouse in Ubuntu 22.04
In Ubuntu 22.04, accidental key presses can sometimes cause the trackpad and mouse to freeze. This issue is not unique to Ubuntu 22.04, as similar problems have been reported in previous versions.
Possible Causes
Conflicting keyboard shortcuts: Certain keyboard shortcuts, such as Ctrl+C, might be triggering a system-wide event that freezes the trackpad and mouse.
Compiz or GNOME settings: Misconfigured or buggy settings in Compiz or GNOME might be causing the issue.
Troubleshooting Steps
Try a different TTY: Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a different TTY. If you can access the terminal, inspect the output of the dmesg command for any error messages related to the trackpad or mouse.
Disable “Disable touchpad while typing”: Go to System Settings > Mouse and Touchpad > Touchpad and uncheck the “Disable touchpad while typing” option. This might resolve the issue.
Reset psmouse module: Run the following commands in a terminal:
This resets the psmouse module and sets the protocol to imps, which might help restore trackpad functionality. 4. Check for kernel updates: Ensure your kernel is up-to-date, as newer versions might include fixes for similar issues.
Permanent Solution
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to investigate and fix the underlying cause, such as:
Identifying and fixing conflicting keyboard shortcuts: Review your keyboard shortcuts and adjust them to avoid conflicts.
Configuring Compiz or GNOME settings: Adjust settings in Compiz or GNOME to resolve any potential issues.
Remember to test your trackpad and mouse after applying each fix to ensure the issue is resolved.
Current version of Zorin is based on Ubuntu 22.04.
You might want to consider using a key guard to avoid the accidental key presses:
or you could try using the accessibility feature of sticky keys.
hi - thank you......but problem not resolved yet - i am checking one by one -
Shortcut keys - I don't think this is an issue in my case...i only use basic shortcuts & i have not customized any personal shortcuts
Gnome settings - In which section can i find this -
TTY - cannot access terminal
Disable touchpad while typing - tried this option, but having same issue
Resent psmouse module with command - i did reset - but still having same issue
kernels are updated -
I have been using Zorin for quiet a long time now - never faced such issue previously.. its very irritating - so what must have caused it... Will re-installing Zorin solve the issue ?? cuz i can't go logout-login all the time for accidental key press...
You mentioned you had no issue with Mint which suggests the issue is the Gnome DE (Desktop Environment) in Zorin. might be the cause. @Frog has had no problem installing Cinnamon DE on his Zorin install. I suggest you give that a try. Insrall Synaptic Package Manager from Software, launch it and first mark all upgrades and Apply. Next search for Cinnamon. If it come back with more than one item it might need several packages to be installed. Mark each item for installation, then click on Apply. After installation is complete reboot your machine, select your user name and then click on the cog that appears low right. You should see an option to select Cinnamon, select it, then enter your password to login to the Cinnamon DE.
If I remember correctly Synaptic does have a bunch of other items listed which can confuse some like me ..... but it can be done just have to take your time and read carefully .....
ok - a question & a doubt // what if the problem still persist even with cinnamon de....how can i uninstall it.....
then maybe reinstalling zorin would be my last option
You have to remember that Zorin is a fork of Ubuntu, some of which cannot be changed and from searches, there is reference to Ubuntu having the issues you are faced with. If you want something that has something similar to Zorin Appearance, Q4OS has a 'look switcher' you can install after it has been installed. Alternatively you could give PCLinuxOS Debian Edition a try - they offer 5 different flavours of Desktop Environments, Plasma/Plasma Mini (KDE), xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, and budgie. If you have any issues with the alternatives I have presented to you I am active on both forums, but currently more active on PCLOS Debian forum.
I feel your pain. I have had many Bleeping Annoyances with accidental keypresses doing many different things that disrupt workflow. Often, due to keyboard shortcuts that are not listed in the shortcuts menu.
Smacking F11 or F12 when I backspace is one. Another is ctl+...something which activates Expand From Center in GIMP.
I must ask at this point, if you have fully checked the default Keyboard shortcuts.
Given your description, it seems highly likely that either disabling the touchpad while typing or removing the superfluous shortcut should resolve your issue.
