Ubuntu latest or Trixie

Hello guys,
Please recommend a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu (25.04) that allows me to receive the latest application updates, such as the most recent version of GIMP, without using Flatpak or Snap. Or should I use Debian 13 testing

Debian 13 is not out yet. I suppose you could use the "unstable" branch once Debian 13 is released, and stay with that. You could use Siduction, too. Look into that. Up to you. But if you want something more "stable" yet is also still "mainstream," look at Fedora. Fedora uses .RPMs, and updated versions of software are released every 6 months (as is a new OS version). Good luck.

Debian Testing will not give you the latest versions of software, as they still need to go through some triage... it just doesn't make much sense to go uphill on this topic. Debian and "latest" are not going to mix well, especially since "latest" is a moving target.

The question is: what do you need, and can Debian fill that need?

Thank you for the explanations. I want to use the latest versions of some software. Fedora seems like a good distribution, but unfortunately, some distributions like Fedora have been restricted in Iran, which makes it difficult for me to install or update them. Although Zorin 17 works for me, having a few more up-to-date applications would be better. Also, I hardly have access to Flatpak, and due to my very slow internet speed, I can’t install packages like Snap.

You could take a Look at this new hyped Distro called AnduinOS. It doesn't have Snap but flatpak preinstalled. But You could simply uninstall Flatpak if You don't want use it. There are 2 Versions:

  • a LTS Version 1.1 which is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
  • a 1.3 Version which is based on Ubuntu 25.04

Maybe worth a Try could be Debian 12 in Combination with Debian Backports. So, You could install more up-to-date Software.

What about OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, or any of the Arch-based distributions like Endeavour OS?

Or, you can always go the long way and compile those programs from the source code.

Once I have compiled ffmpeg on Zorin OS, it took me roughly an hour . I also tried CachyOS, but it didn’t appeal to me. I suppose I’ll have to wait until Z18 is released.
@Ponce-De-Leon Thanks, I will check that too.
