I'm working from a laptop running Ubuntu 24.10 and cannot create an install disk. My download of Zorin Core OS checked good, the 16Gb USB is clean, but I get an error message from either balenaEtcher or USBImager. I've tried inserting the thumb drive in a different port with the same results. Suggestions are welcome.
Try the Popsicle application for flashing images to usb. Never fails for me.
What error message are you getting from the USB from the applications? And do you mean that it won't even allow you to start flashing the drive and immediately fails?
I tried to install Popsicle by .zip but didn't get it to work .... finally found it as an Appimage that one worked but not sure if Appimages are safe or not ....
Applecheeks37- balenaEtcher returned this:
"Something went wrong. If it is a compressed image, please check that the archive is not corrupted. Error Spawning the child process."
And USBImager returned this:
Operation not permitted. Unable to mount volumes on device."
Michel- I'll give popsicle a try.
Well, with that it is like every Software. Form who is it and where do You get it? Because the AppImage comes from the Pop OS github Page and not from a ... strange Site from the Internet, it is a good Indicator that it is okay.
You could take the AppImage an scan it on virustotal to check it.
These Error Messages ... because of the first One I would ask You if You have checked the Checksum of the ISO File:
And the 2nd One reads like the Imager doesn't have the Permisson to access the Stick. Is the USB Stick Password Protected or encrypted?
And how is the Stick formatted? FAT32?
Alternatives for creating a bootable Stick:
- Impression (available as a Flatpak)
- Gnome Multi Writer (should be installable over the Terminal with
sudo apt install gnome-multi-writer
) - Fedora Media Writer (available as Flatpak)
Ponce-De-Leon - Zorin OS from their website, and the imaging tools from links on the Zorin Install instructions page. Yes, I used QuickHash to verify the checksum. The disk has no security or protections set and is formatted for FAT32.
do you have a dvd drive ?
burn the ISO onto a dvd with Xfburn
If using Windows then imgburn. Unfortunately, current version has a lot of adverts from what I read a while back.
Okay. So, maybe one of the Programs could work. Oh, and something else: Did You tried several USB Sticks or only one?
When You would have the Possibility to use a Windows PC, You could try it with Rufus. That works good, too. And You can set up the Partition Sheme depending if Your BIOS is in UEFI or Legacy Mode. When it is in UEFI Mode, use GPT and when it is in Legacy Mode, use MBR.
Thanks .... when i tied to install it using the terminal it came back saying that the download didn't support noble .... so I guess I'll just use the AppImage version ....
I might add that this is on Mint and not Zorin ..... maybe that makes a difference but both OS's are based on Ubuntu so I'm not so sure .....
I'll see if Popsicle is available on Synaptic and try that ..... Mint does use it for downloads and updates ......
Nope not .... Popsicle is not available on Synaptic ..... shame
I agree with Michel, I am personally an advocate of Popsicle USB flasher, its the best one I've tried, and I never had any problems with it.
Also, please be aware, once you have finished the process with Popsicle, before you actually go to install Zorin OS onto your computer, make sure to go into the BIOS, and set it to boot off your USB stick first. Then also disable Secure Boot
& Fast Boot
in your BIOS as well.
Note: Important Warning from @Aravisian for those that install popsicle and leave the Repository in place. See here:
I guess, you will only get Popsicle over the Terminal in POP OS. I think, it will come there from there own Repo.
So, You have the Option to take the AppImage or take a Flatpak, but this isn't verified and an older Version.
I personally play at the Moment with Ventoy. It is nice, too. You can set it up for GPT and MBR - even for Secure Boot. You can let show Checksums. And You can customize it with GRUB Themes for an individual Look.
@zabadabadoo @Ponce-De-Leon Popsicle has a appimage for other distro’s, i tried it in zorin 17.2 and it is working perfectly fine.
The file is safe as it is from the Pop! OS devs.
Yes, that is the AppImage from their github Page.
