Well. If it was me. I would'nt do that again.
I think there are steps you can take to minimize that RAM gobbling but... I would need to look all that up.

Well that wasn't exactly the answer I was hoping for ;D
Just to clarify: I was intending to use the LaTeX packages (the LuaLaTex and windows fonts specifically) for writing my thesis in accordance with my chairs templates.
If I understand you correctly, that might be unsafe on my specific notebook configuration without further checks?
The packages you were installing are, as far as I understand, intended for servers, not home computers.
But... have you run memtest on your RAM to determine if a faulty RAM stick may be responsible?
Oh that is something I will have to investigate ![]()
I am currently running memtester and have mixed feelings about the output...
I'll report back to you in a minute.
@Aravisian below you will find the terminal messages from running memtester.
To be honest I am slightly confused seeing hardware error reports again, but during varying parts of the memtester process and reporting different kernels.

Done.
It's not a happy result, nor is it conclusive.
The memtest reported all memory as having "passed."
However...
The same address 0x000000001ebac840 keeps reporting fault and same values which is no coincidence 0x000001ff0a240701 , 0x0000009600050f00
Those are the same bits each time.
They are labeled as "correctable" and you see that action (Over and over) in your log. The motherboard IMC is correcting for it and that Could lead to the "pass" result on memtest.
Less Likely, it can mean the fault is in IMC.
What it means: For normal use, it is not something to worry about. It is a small correctable fault, - it may even be due to dirt or corrosion on RAM connection pins in the slot.
For what you want - High risk of a repeat.
That is unfortunate news indeed.
Am I risking further damage if I keep using LuaLatex and etc on this notebook or is the "worst" that can happen, that I have to go through the procedure you guided me through again?
Well, the worst that can happen is hardware failure.
I think the odds are low of that - but if we are acknowledging worst case - that must be known.
The way this is worded... implies that you are currently using - or have some TeX installed... Is that the case?
What we can try is examing the packages you need - and then seeing if we can do away with the intensive ones... But as you said "fonts" earlier, that was the part where the problem began. But you may have meant only basic Microsoft fonts. So if we can clarify that, too..
Ok I understand, thank you for clarifying this!
Well I am currently using the flathub version of TeXstudio installed through the zorin software app. Inside TeXstudio I am currently using the following packages (might need more/ others in the future, not sure yet):
\usepackage{biblatex}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{url}
\usepackage{titlesec}
\usepackage{parskip}
\usepackage{geometry}
\usepackage{color}
\usepackage{setspace}
\usepackage{fontspec}
In TeXstudio the standard compiler is set to LuaLaTex and the standard bibliography to biber
Not sure, if that is all the information you are needing, please let me know!
In case you are wondering, why I am using the flathub version: The zorin native version is very outdated (flathub = 4.9.1 and zorin = 4.2.1) and the TeXstudio website only offers direct/ obvious downloads for ubuntu 24.04, but I am running zorin os 17.3, which is ubuntu 22.04 to my understanding.
If there is an option to run the up to date version of TeXstudio without having to use the flathub version, I would highly appreciate it. I already suspected the sandboxing to cause unnecessary problems in my use case with additional packages.
Ah I forgot to mention, why I was messing around with windows fonts:
If I remember correctly, I ran into a problem using LuaLaTex and the recommended/ proposed solution was to install the windows fonts, since they where missing.
In my chairs template "Arial" is used (and probably expected) as the standard font:
\setmainfont{Arial}
Are you in a hurry on this? Or can I take my time to look into it?
You can install Microsoft fonts, outside of TeX and all that with
sudo apt update && sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
Well let me put it that way: I do not feel to be in a position to set any time restrictions on such a kind and helpful person like you ![]()
As far as my own timeline is concerned, I am on a rather tight schedule and thinking about changing to another notebook within the next few days, to avoid any fruther loss of precious time.
I think that is exactly the command I stumbled upon in the past ![]()
I will rerun it quickly...
EDIT: ttf-mscorefonts-installer seems to be installed already, as I have remembered.
And this did not contain the needed fonts for the other?
Some fonts, like Tahoma, for example, are purely proprietary for MS and cannot be installed on GnuLinux, at all.
To be honest I can't really remember which steps I took, while trying to get LuaLaTex and TeXstudio working. I know, ttf-mscorefonts-installer was one of them, but I can't recall if it was the solution or one of the earlier steps which were in conflict with the flathub sandboxing.
I would explore this option if possible. Even if we compiled a "safe list" tonight - it becomes pretty hacky, trying to weigh risk vs need. If your goal was trying to play your favorite game, that would be one thing.
Completing a thesis is a whole nother risk level.
From the previous, I would guess that there is a minor defect in your RAM or the CPU IMU. I would believe RAM is the culprit as the likeliest.
It's fine for normal use but put a strain on it and things spiral. And the software definitely put a strain on it. I have TeX and have used TeX for mathematics and presentation (Physics), but I am not a LaTeX expert. I am in the dark about a lot of the software's inner workings.
It's like automotive - how much does a person want to spend throwing money at a problem: You could buy new RAM...
