Unable to upgrade Firefox

Hello all. I'm running 17.2 Core. The latest Firefox version is 136.0.3, and I've been unable to upgrade to it. I had been running 122.0.1 successfully for a year, and it upgraded automatically with no issues. I've downloaded and extracted the file, But I can't get it to load and run. I've not tried it in Terminal because I don't know how to do that.

All help is appreciated.

I have uninstalled Firefox and am currently using the Firefox Flatpak version and always receive updates promptly.
I currently have 137.0 installed.
So far no disadvantages since I switched to the Flatpak version.

Hi, welcome to the forums!

If you've been using the same version for over a year, it was not being upgraded. Perhaps minor versions and patches, but there have been other major releases since then even on the ESR version of Firefox.

Based on how you downloaded it (I assume you used the .tar.gz file, based on how you mentioned that you downloaded and extracted the file) it's possible that it's hard coded to not upgrade beyond the current point release at that time.

I'd suggest you first make a backup copy of your Firefox profiles (found at ~/.mozilla/firefox), uninstall it and add the repository that Mozilla has available. This will handle all the updates as expected:

Welcome to the Forum!

When You have Zorin 17.2 installed, Firefox should get automatically Updates over the in the System integrated Mozilla-own Repo. And Firefox comes in 17.2 preinstalled.

When You type in the Terminal sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade what Output do You get? These Commands will fresh up the Sources and look for Updates.
